Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)
The signs, what causes it, and when to see a ophthalmology specialist in Lagos.
Signs to look for
Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)
- Often no visible sign at all
- A squint, with one eye turning
- Poor vision in one eye found at a vision test
- Bumping into things on one side
- Squinting, tilting the head or covering one eye to see
A lazy eye, or amblyopia, is when the vision in one eye does not develop properly in childhood, because the brain favours the other eye. The commonest causes are a squint, a big difference in glasses prescription between the eyes, or something blocking the sight early in life, such as a cataract or a drooping lid. The eye itself often looks normal, so parents and teachers do not notice, and the child does not complain because the good eye does the work. Treatment works best while the child is young, which is why a vision check before starting school matters so much.

Symptoms
- Often no visible sign at all
- A squint, with one eye turning
- Poor vision in one eye found at a vision test
- Bumping into things on one side
- Squinting, tilting the head or covering one eye to see
- Poor depth perception, such as trouble catching a ball
When to See a Doctor
Have every child's vision checked, one eye at a time, before starting school, and earlier if you notice a squint, a drooping lid or a white pupil. A white pupil in a photograph or in the light needs to be seen within days. The younger a lazy eye is treated, the better the result.
Treatment options
- Glasses worn all day, which are often the first and main treatment
- Patching the good eye for some hours each day
- Atropine eye drops in the good eye, as an alternative to a patch
- Treating the cause, such as squint surgery, cataract surgery or ptosis repair
- Regular vision checks until the vision has stabilised

Common Questions
Can a lazy eye be treated in an adult?
Treatment works best in young children, while the brain is still learning to see. Older children can still benefit. In adults the results of patching are limited, which is why early checks matter.
Does squint surgery fix a lazy eye?
No. Surgery straightens the eye. The weak vision is treated with glasses and patching or drops, usually before any surgery.
My child hates the patch. What can we do?
This is very common. Short patching sessions during an activity the child enjoys help, and atropine drops are an alternative. Tell the eye team rather than stopping.
