Squint Surgery, Strabismus at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a ₦35,000 consultation, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers surgeon and theatre, anaesthetist and the anaesthetic, and drops after surgery. Prices last checked 23 October 2026.

The muscles on the outside of the eye are moved or tightened so the eyes point in the same direction. It is a day case, under a general anaesthetic for children and many adults. In a child, glasses and treatment for a lazy eye come first, because surgery straightens the eye but does not make a weak eye see. A squint does not go away on its own once a baby is past the first few months, and leaving it can cost the sight in that eye.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant ophthalmology opinion: ₦35,000

Your price is a written quote after the orthoptic and eye examination, because it depends on how many muscles need surgery, whether one or both eyes are operated on, and whether a general anaesthetic is needed. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • Surgeon and theatre
  • Anaesthetist and the anaesthetic
  • Drops after surgery
  • Reviews in the first weeks after surgery

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation and the orthoptic measurements
  • Glasses, and patching or drops for a lazy eye before surgery
  • Further surgery if the eyes drift again in later years

What decides your quote

  • How many eye muscles are operated on
  • One eye or both
  • Adjustable stitches, used for some adults
  • A general anaesthetic for an adult who prefers or needs one

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Who this is for

  • A child whose squint remains after glasses and lazy eye treatment
  • A squint large enough to affect how the eyes work together, or how the child sees
  • An adult with double vision from a squint
  • An adult with a long-standing squint who wants the eyes to look straight, which is a reasonable reason in its own right

When it is not the right answer

  • A child who has not yet had glasses and lazy eye treatment, which come first and sometimes correct the squint completely
  • A squint that is fully corrected by glasses
  • A new squint or double vision that appeared suddenly in an adult or child, which needs urgent checks for a nerve or brain cause before anything else

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Eye examination and orthoptic assessment₦35,000

Vision in each eye, a check for glasses using drops, and careful measurement of the squint in every direction of gaze.

  2. 2

Glasses and lazy eye treatment first

For a child: glasses worn all day, and patching or drops for a weak eye, often for months. The squint is measured again once vision has improved.

  3. 3

    A written plan and price

Which muscles, one or both eyes, and the anaesthetic, with the price in writing.

  4. 4

    The operation

About an hour. The eye is not removed from its socket: the surgeon works on the muscles through the clear skin over the white of the eye.

  5. 5

    Home the same day

With drops, and a clear number to call.

  6. 6

    Reviews₦25,000

In the first weeks to check alignment, and longer term for children, whose vision is still developing.

Recovery, realistically

Days 1 to 3

The eye is red, sore and watery. Double vision for a few days is common, especially in adults.

Week 1 to 2

Back to school or work within about a week. No swimming for two weeks.

Weeks 2 to 6

The redness fades. The alignment settles over the following weeks.

Months after

Children keep wearing glasses and continue lazy eye treatment if they need it.

Risks you should be told about

  • Under or over correction, where the eye is not fully straight or turns the other way, sometimes needing more surgery
  • Double vision, usually short-lived
  • Redness that takes weeks to fade
  • Infection, uncommon
  • Serious damage to the eye or vision, rare

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Will my child's squint go away on its own?

A baby's eyes can wander now and then in the first few months. A squint that is still there after that, or that appears later, does not go away by itself, and the turning eye can lose sight permanently if it is not treated. Have it checked early.

Is a squint caused by something the child did or something spiritual?

No. A squint is a problem with how the eye muscles and the brain work together, often with a need for glasses. It is common, it runs in some families, and it is treatable.

Does surgery cure a lazy eye?

No. Surgery straightens the eye. A lazy eye is treated with glasses and patching or drops, ideally while the child is young, because the brain is still learning to see.

Can adults have squint surgery?

Yes. Adults can have it to ease double vision or to straighten an eye that has turned for years. Some adults have adjustable stitches, fine-tuned shortly after surgery.

Why is there no fixed price on this page?

Because the number of muscles, one or both eyes, and the anaesthetic change the price. You get it in writing after the measurements, before anything is booked.
