Retinal Detachment
The signs, what causes it, and when to see a ophthalmology specialist in Lagos.
Signs to look for
Retinal Detachment
- Sudden flashes of light, often at the edge of vision
- A shower of new floaters, dots or cobwebs
- A dark shadow or curtain spreading across part of the vision
- Blurred or wavy central vision
- No pain
A retinal detachment is when the retina, the thin seeing layer at the back of the eye, peels away from the wall of the eye. It usually starts with a tear, often as the jelly inside the eye shrinks with age. Fluid passes through the tear and lifts the retina, and the part that lifts stops working. It is painless, which is why people wait, and it is an emergency: without repair the eye usually loses its sight, and the sooner it is repaired the more vision is usually kept. Short-sighted people, people who have had cataract surgery, people with an eye injury and people with advanced diabetic eye disease are at higher risk.

Symptoms
- Sudden flashes of light, often at the edge of vision
- A shower of new floaters, dots or cobwebs
- A dark shadow or curtain spreading across part of the vision
- Blurred or wavy central vision
- No pain
When to See a Doctor
Go to an eye specialist the same day if you notice sudden flashes, a shower of new floaters, or a shadow or curtain across your vision, even if it is painless and even if it seems to settle. Do not wait for a routine appointment. A few old floaters that have not changed are usually harmless, but any new ones deserve one dilated examination.
Treatment options
- Laser or freezing treatment to seal a tear before it detaches
- Pneumatic retinopexy: a gas bubble injected into the eye, with laser or freezing
- Scleral buckle: a band stitched to the outside of the eye
- Vitrectomy: removing the jelly from inside the eye and holding the retina with gas or silicone oil
- Head positioning at home after surgery, where gas is used

Common Questions
Is a retinal detachment painful?
No, and that is the danger. It causes flashes, floaters and a shadow, not pain, so people wait. It still needs to be seen the same day.
Can a detached retina heal by itself?
No. It needs laser or surgery. Drops, medicines and rest do not reattach it.
Are floaters always a sign of detachment?
No. Most floaters are harmless. A sudden shower of new ones, especially with flashes or a shadow, needs a dilated eye examination to look for a tear.
