Signs to look for

Squint (Strabismus)

  • One eye turning in, out, up or down
  • A child closing or covering one eye in bright light
  • Tilting or turning the head to look at things
  • Double vision, mainly in older children and adults
  • Poor vision in one eye

A squint, or strabismus, is when the eyes point in different directions: one eye looks straight ahead while the other turns in, out, up or down. It can be there all the time or come and go. In children it is often linked to a need for glasses, especially long sight, and it can run in families. A child's brain learns to ignore the turning eye, which can then become lazy and lose sight for life if it is not treated while the child is young. It is a common belief that a squint will go away as the child grows. After the first few months of life it does not, and early treatment is what protects the sight.

Symptoms

  • One eye turning in, out, up or down
  • A child closing or covering one eye in bright light
  • Tilting or turning the head to look at things
  • Double vision, mainly in older children and adults
  • Poor vision in one eye

When to See a Doctor

See an eye specialist for any squint in a child older than about three months, or at any age if it is constant. Have every child's vision checked before starting school. A squint or double vision that appears suddenly, especially with headache, a drooping lid or weakness, needs to be seen urgently the same day.

Treatment options

  • Glasses, which correct many squints in children on their own
  • Patching or eye drops to treat a lazy eye
  • Eye exercises, for a small number of squint types
  • Squint surgery to straighten the eyes
  • Botulinum toxin injection into an eye muscle, for some squints

Common Questions

Will my child grow out of a squint?

Not after the first few months. Newborn eyes can wander now and then, but a squint after about three months needs an eye examination. Leaving it can cost the sight in the turning eye.

Is a squint caused by bad luck or a spiritual problem?

No. It is a problem with how the eye muscles and the brain work together, often with a need for glasses. It is common and treatable.

Can adults have a squint treated?

Yes. Glasses with prisms, injections or surgery can ease double vision or straighten an eye that has turned for years.
