The short answer
From Gusau the road to Kaduna runs east to Funtua, then on through Zaria. It is a long journey across state lines, so families from Zamfara usually plan eye surgery as one stay of two or three nights. Agree the plan by video first, bring a relative who can stay, and keep the morning check after surgery before travelling home.

Through Funtua and Zaria
The usual route is Gusau to Funtua, Funtua to Zaria, then the expressway south to Kaduna. Ask about current conditions before you set out, travel only in daylight, and break the journey if the patient is elderly or unwell. Fuel and food stops are easier to plan in the bigger towns on the way.
Who decides, and who comes
Decisions about surgery are often made by the head of the family together with the patient. A video consultation where the doctor explains the operation, the risks and the recovery, with the decision-makers present, saves a second journey just to discuss it. Then choose one companion who can stay for the whole visit.
Women travelling for eye care
If a woman in the family would be more comfortable with a female chaperone during the examination, say so when you book. Bring a male or female relative as the family prefers. Tell the desk about any needs for privacy, prayer times or food, so the day can be planned around them.

Common questions
Can the Mezo desk help us plan the dates before we leave Gusau?
Yes. Once the doctor has seen you by video, the desk can book the examination and, where the surgeon agrees, the operation date, so you know the plan before you travel.
Can I ask for a chaperone during the examination?
Yes. Asking for a chaperone is normal. Mention it when you book so it is arranged before you arrive.
What should I do with my drops on the journey home?
Keep them in your hand luggage, out of direct sun, and use them at the times you were given, even on the road. Set phone alarms so no dose is missed.
