The short answer
Anyone with a parent, brother, sister or child with glaucoma should have their eyes checked, even if they see perfectly. People of African heritage get the common type of glaucoma more often and often younger, so adults in Nigeria should have a full eye check by around 40, earlier with a family history, and then as often as the eye doctor advises. Glaucoma causes no pain and no early symptoms, so a check is the only way to catch it.

Why you cannot wait for symptoms
The common type of glaucoma slowly damages the optic nerve from the edges of vision inwards. Your central sight stays sharp until late, so you can read and see faces while a large part of your side vision has gone. Sight lost to glaucoma does not come back. Found early, treatment can usually protect what you have.
Who is at higher risk
- People of African or Caribbean heritage
- A close relative with glaucoma
- Age over 40, and rising with each decade
- Short-sightedness or long-sightedness of a high degree, depending on the type of glaucoma
- Diabetes, and long-term use of steroid medicines, including steroid eye drops and skin-lightening creams used near the eyes
- A past eye injury
What a proper glaucoma check involves
A pressure reading alone is not enough, because glaucoma can occur with normal pressure. A full check includes:
- Eye pressure measurement
- A look at the optic nerve at the back of the eye, usually with dilating drops
- A visual field test, which maps your side vision
- Often a scan of the nerve fibre layer, called OCT
- Checking the drainage angle, to tell open-angle from narrow-angle glaucoma
How often
If your first check is normal, your eye doctor will tell you when to come back, which depends on your age and risk. If you have a family history or are told your pressure is borderline, checks are more frequent. If you are diagnosed, you are checked regularly for life to make sure treatment is working.
If a parent has glaucoma, tell your brothers, sisters and grown-up children. It is one of the most useful things a family can do for each other's sight.

Common questions
My eyes are fine and I can read small print. Do I still need a check?
Yes, if you are at risk. Good central sight does not rule out glaucoma.
Is glaucoma inherited?
It runs in families. Having a relative with it raises your risk, though it does not mean you will get it.
Can an optician check for glaucoma?
An optometrist can measure pressure and look at the nerve, and is a good first step. A suspected case should be seen by an ophthalmologist for the full tests.
Can I book an eye check on Mezo?
Yes. You can book a verified eye specialist for an in-person examination. A video consultation helps you decide what you need, but pressure and nerve checks need the clinic.
