Adult ADHD assessment, by video
A proper ADHD assessment is not a ten-minute questionnaire. It is two sessions with a psychiatrist, standard rating scales, a history from someone who knew you as a child, and a check for the conditions that look like ADHD, such as anxiety, depression and poor sleep. You get a written report with the diagnosis or the reason it was not made, and a treatment plan.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
First psychiatric consultation, 90 minutes by video: ₦100,000
Each psychiatrist sets their own fee, shown before you book.
The assessment fee is set by your psychiatrist and agreed with you at the first consultation, before the assessment is booked.
What your written quote covers
- Two sessions with a psychiatrist by video, 90 minutes each
- Standard adult ADHD rating scales, for you and for someone who knows you well
- A structured diagnostic interview covering childhood and adult life
- Screening for anxiety, depression, sleep and substance problems
- A written report with the diagnosis and a treatment plan
Not in the quote
- Medication, and the follow-up reviews needed while it is started
- Assessments for children, which need a child and adolescent specialist
- Tests to rule out a physical cause, quoted if needed
What decides your quote
- The fee is the same whether or not ADHD is diagnosed
- A third session, if one is needed to complete the picture, is charged at the follow-up price and agreed first
Some HMO plans cover outpatient psychiatry and need prior authorisation first. If you want your plan to pay, tell the coordinator before you book and the desk will apply. If you pay yourself, your HMO is not involved and is not told.
Who this is for
- Adults who have struggled with attention, organisation, restlessness or impulsiveness since childhood
- People whose work or studies keep falling short of their ability, despite real effort
- Adults whose child has been diagnosed with ADHD and who recognise themselves
When it is not the right answer
- Children under 18. The coordinator can arrange a child and adolescent assessment instead
- A crisis. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency department or call 112. To talk to someone now, call the SURPIN suicide prevention helpline on 0800 078 7746 (free, 24 hours).
- Anyone looking only for a prescription. The assessment may conclude it is not ADHD
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Ask for the assessment
A coordinator books both sessions and sends the rating scales, one for you and one for a parent, sibling or partner who knew you growing up.
- 2
First session
Your history now and as a child, how you work, sleep and manage day to day, and the conditions that can look like ADHD.
- 3
Second session
The structured diagnostic interview, the rating scales reviewed together, and the conclusion.
- 4
Written report and plan
The diagnosis, or the reason it was not made, and what to do next.
- 5
Treatment and review
If medication is started, reviews follow while the dose is found.
What happens afterwards
Within two weeks
Both sessions completed and the report in your hands.
Starting treatment
Reviews every few weeks while medication, if chosen, is started and adjusted.
Longer term
Reviews every few months, with the plan adjusted to your work and life.
Risks and limits you should know
- The assessment may find that something else, such as anxiety, depression or a sleep problem, explains the difficulty better than ADHD
- ADHD medicines are controlled drugs in Nigeria and supply can be patchy. The psychiatrist will discuss what is realistically available
- Without a history from someone who knew you as a child, a diagnosis may not be possible
Every treatment has limits and side effects. Yours are explained before you start, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
Can adults really have ADHD?
Yes. ADHD starts in childhood, but many people are never assessed, especially those who did well enough at school or were simply called lazy or troublesome. It often continues into adult life.
What if my parents are not available for the history?
An older sibling, relative or anyone who knew you well as a child can help, and school reports are useful. Tell the coordinator and the psychiatrist will advise.
Do you assess children?
Not on this page. Children need a child and adolescent specialist. Ask for a call back and a coordinator will arrange it.
