What would change this price

  • Nothing found in the consultation changes its fee
  • Any test is quoted to you before it is ordered
  • Follow-ups are booked at the end of the consultation, at the follow-up price

Some HMO plans cover outpatient psychiatry and need prior authorisation first. If you want your plan to pay, tell the coordinator before you book and the desk will apply. If you pay yourself, your HMO is not involved and is not told.

Who this is for

  • Low mood, worry or poor sleep that has lasted more than two weeks and is getting in the way of work, study or family
  • Panic attacks, or fear that is shrinking the life you live
  • Mood swings, racing thoughts or periods of needing very little sleep
  • Hearing or seeing things others do not, or a relative who has changed and you do not know why
  • Adults who think they may have ADHD
  • Anyone on psychiatric medication started elsewhere who now needs a psychiatrist to review it
  • A family member worried about someone, who wants to know what to do next

When it is not the right answer

  • Anyone in immediate danger or who may act on thoughts of suicide. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency department or call 112. To talk to someone now, call the SURPIN suicide prevention helpline on 0800 078 7746 (free, 24 hours).
  • Someone who is confused, violent or too unwell to take part in a video call. They need to be seen in a hospital today
  • An adult who has not agreed to the consultation. A psychiatrist can still advise the family, and the coordinator can arrange that

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

Choose a time and pay online

Pick a slot with a psychiatrist on the booking page. You get a private video link. If no time suits you, ask for a call back and a coordinator finds one.

  2. 2

    The consultation₦100,000

What is happening and for how long, sleep, appetite, energy, work, relationships, past episodes, family history, alcohol and drugs, and physical health. It is not rushed.

  3. 3

    A diagnosis and a plan

What the psychiatrist thinks is going on, in plain words, and the options: talking therapy, medication, changes you can make, or a combination. You decide together.

  4. 4

Tests, only if they are needed

Thyroid problems, anaemia and some medicines can look like depression or anxiety. If the psychiatrist needs to rule them out, the tests are arranged and quoted before they are ordered.

  5. 5

    Follow-up while treatment settles

Usually two to four weeks after starting medication, then less often as you improve. Booked at the end of the consultation, at your psychiatrist's own fee.

What happens afterwards

The same day

You have a plan, a prescription if one is needed, and a date for follow-up.

Weeks 2 to 4

Most medicines start to help in this window. Side effects, if any, are usually worst in the first fortnight and settle.

Weeks 6 to 12

The point at which the plan is judged. If it is not working well enough, it is changed, not abandoned.

After that

Reviews spaced out as you stay well. Medication is reduced slowly, with the psychiatrist, when the time is right.

Risks and limits you should know

  • A video call cannot replace a physical examination. If you need one, you will be told and it will be arranged
  • Medicines can cause side effects, most of them mild and short-lived. Each one is explained before you start
  • A first consultation sometimes ends without a firm diagnosis, because some conditions only become clear over time
  • Confidentiality has one limit, as everywhere in medicine: a serious and immediate risk to your life or someone else's

Every treatment has limits and side effects. Yours are explained before you start, and you can always say no.

Questions people ask

Will my employer, family or HMO find out?

Not from us. What you say is confidential and is not shared without your consent. If you pay yourself, your HMO is not involved. The only exception, as anywhere in medicine, is a serious and immediate risk to life.

Is a video consultation as good as being seen in person?

For most first assessments, yes. Psychiatry is mostly a conversation, and many people find it easier to talk from their own space. If you need to be examined or seen in person, the psychiatrist will say so.

Can I book for my brother, wife or child?

An adult needs to agree to the consultation and take part in it. If they will not, a coordinator can arrange for the family to speak to a psychiatrist about what to do. For children and teenagers, a parent books and joins.

What if I am in crisis right now?

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency department or call 112. To talk to someone now, call the SURPIN suicide prevention helpline on 0800 078 7746 (free, 24 hours).
