ADHD in Adults and Children
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a lifelong difference in how the brain manages attention, activity and impulses. It starts in childhood, but many people are never assessed, especially those who were labelled lazy, stubborn or troublesome. In adults it often shows up as disorganisation, missed deadlines and restlessness, despite real ability and effort.

When to See a Doctor
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency department or call 112. To talk to someone now, call the SURPIN suicide prevention helpline on 0800 078 7746 (free, 24 hours). See a psychiatrist if these difficulties go back to childhood and are causing real problems at work, in study or in relationships. Children should be assessed by a child and adolescent specialist, through the coordinator.

Common Questions
Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD?
Yes. Symptoms must have started in childhood, but a diagnosis can be made at any age. A history from someone who knew you as a child is a key part of the assessment.
Is ADHD caused by bad parenting?
No. ADHD is strongly influenced by genes and is a difference in brain development. Structure at home helps, but it does not cause or cure ADHD.
