Follow-up and medication review with a psychiatrist
A video review to check how treatment is going, deal with side effects, adjust the dose and renew the prescription. Already on medication from another doctor or from abroad? Your first appointment here is the full consultation, so the psychiatrist knows you before changing anything. After that, reviews are at your psychiatrist's own fee, agreed in advance.
Also called: Medication review, Psychiatric review, Antidepressant review
Medically reviewed by Dr Debo Odulana, Founder and Chief Executive, Mezo. Last reviewed . This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Care is decided with you after an examination.
How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
First psychiatric consultation, 90 minutes by video: ₦100,000
Each psychiatrist sets their own fee, shown before you book.
Fees after the first consultation are set by your psychiatrist and agreed with you at that consultation, before anything is booked.
What your written quote covers
- A review with your psychiatrist by private video
- A review of symptoms, side effects and dose
- A renewed or changed prescription where appropriate
- A date for the next review
Not in the quote
- The medication itself
- Monitoring blood tests some medicines need, such as lithium levels
- The first consultation, for anyone new to Mezo
What decides your quote
- The fee is the same whatever is decided
- Monitoring tests are quoted before they are ordered
Some HMO plans cover outpatient psychiatry and need prior authorisation first. If you want your plan to pay, tell the coordinator before you book and the desk will apply. If you pay yourself, your HMO is not involved and is not told.

- People whose medication is not working well enough, or is causing side effects
- People who are well and want to reduce or stop medication safely
When it is not the right answer
- A crisis. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency department or call 112. To talk to someone now, call the SURPIN suicide prevention helpline on 0800 078 7746 (free, 24 hours).

The pathway, step by step
- 1
Booked at the end of your last consultation
Or ask for a call back at any time and a coordinator books the next free review.
- 2
The review
What has changed, what has not, side effects, sleep, and anything new. Doses are adjusted together.
- 3
Prescription and next date
A renewed or changed prescription, and the next review set at a sensible interval.
What happens afterwards
Early treatment
Reviews every two to four weeks while a medicine is started or changed.
Once stable
Every two to three months, or sooner if anything changes.
Coming off
Doses are reduced in steps over weeks or months. Stopping suddenly can bring symptoms back or cause withdrawal effects.
Risks and limits you should know
- Stopping medication suddenly can cause withdrawal effects or relapse. Change it with your psychiatrist
- Some medicines need blood tests to be used safely. You will be told which, and why
Every treatment has limits and side effects. Yours are explained before you start, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
I was diagnosed abroad. Can I just get my prescription renewed?
Book the first consultation instead. A psychiatrist will not take over a prescription without assessing you, and that session is what makes it safe to continue, adjust or stop what you are on. Bring your old letters and the medicine boxes.
How long will I need to take medication?
For a first episode of depression or anxiety, usually six to twelve months after you feel well, then a slow reduction. Some conditions, such as bipolar disorder, need longer-term treatment. It is decided with you, not for you.
What if things get worse between reviews?
Ask for an earlier review through a call back. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, go to the nearest emergency department or call 112.
