Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, SLT at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria costs ₦200,000 all-in (fixed price, one eye). It covers the laser treatment, numbing drops and the contact lens used during laser, and an eye pressure check after the laser. The price is agreed in writing before the operation. Prices last checked 23 October 2026.

A gentle laser treats the eye's drainage meshwork so fluid leaves more easily and the pressure falls. It takes about ten minutes in a clinic chair, with no cut and no stitch. For open-angle glaucoma and raised eye pressure it is now offered as a first treatment, not only when drops fail, and it can reduce or replace drops: which matters in Nigeria, where glaucoma tends to start younger and drops have to be bought and used every day for life.

What would change this price

  • Both eyes, priced separately above
  • Raised pressure after the laser that needs extra treatment
  • A repeat treatment

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Who this is for

  • Newly diagnosed open-angle glaucoma or raised eye pressure, as a first treatment
  • Someone whose pressure is not low enough on drops
  • Someone who struggles to use drops every day, cannot tolerate them, or finds them hard to afford
  • Someone who wants to reduce the number of drops they use

When it is not the right answer

  • Angle-closure glaucoma, where the drainage angle is narrow or closed, which needs a different laser (iridotomy) or surgery
  • Glaucoma that is very advanced or where the pressure must fall a long way, where surgery may be needed
  • Glaucoma caused by inflammation inside the eye

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Full glaucoma assessment₦35,000

Eye pressure, the optic nerve, a visual field test and a look at the drainage angle, which decides whether SLT can work.

  2. 2

    The laser

Numbing drops, a contact lens on the eye, and about ten minutes at the laser. You see flashes of light.

  3. 3

    Pressure check

About an hour later, before you go home.

  4. 4

    Review at six weeks

Included. The laser takes weeks to work fully, so this is when the effect is measured and drops are adjusted.

  5. 5

    Glaucoma checks for life₦25,000

Every few months, because glaucoma is controlled rather than cured.

Recovery, realistically

Same day

Mild ache or blur for a few hours. Bring someone to take you home.

Days 1 to 7

Normal activities from the next day. Keep using any drops you were told to continue.

Weeks 2 to 6

The pressure falls gradually. Do not stop drops unless your specialist tells you to.

Risks you should be told about

  • A short rise in eye pressure after the laser
  • Mild inflammation, aching or redness for a few days
  • Blurred vision for a day
  • The laser not lowering the pressure enough, so drops or surgery are still needed
  • The effect wearing off over the years, when the laser can often be repeated

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Will SLT mean I can stop my drops?

For some people, yes. Others need fewer drops. Some still need the same drops. Your pressure at the six week review decides, and you do not stop any drop before then.

Is SLT better than drops?

For many people with open-angle glaucoma it works as well as drops, without the daily routine, the side effects or the monthly cost. It is offered as a first option, and the choice is yours.

How long does it last?

The effect usually lasts years, and fades gradually in many people. It can usually be repeated.

How is this different from glaucoma surgery?

SLT is a laser in a clinic chair with no cut. Trabeculectomy is an operation in theatre that creates a new drainage channel. Surgery is for pressure that laser and drops have not controlled.
