Breast Cancer Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers theatre time, your bed and nursing care for the planned stay, and medication while you are admitted. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
Surgery removes the cancer from the breast, either the lump with a margin of healthy tissue (breast-conserving surgery, or lumpectomy) or the whole breast (mastectomy), and checks or removes the glands in the armpit. It is planned with the cancer doctors, because most women also need chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone tablets, before or after. The operation follows a biopsy that confirms the diagnosis.
Also called: Mastectomy, Lumpectomy, Wide local excision, Breast-conserving surgery, Modified radical mastectomy, Axillary clearance, Sentinel lymph node biopsy

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has seen your biopsy and scans, because the operation, the armpit surgery and any reconstruction change it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time
- Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
- Medication while you are admitted
- Analysis of the breast tissue and glands removed
- Drain and wound care, and a review with the surgeon
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- Mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and staging scans
- Hormone receptor tests on the biopsy
- Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone treatment
- Breast reconstruction, quoted separately by the plastic surgeon
- Unplanned intensive care or a return to theatre
What decides your quote
- Mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery
- Sentinel node biopsy or removal of all the armpit glands
- One breast or both
- Reconstruction at the same operation
- A longer stay than planned
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- Breast cancer confirmed on a needle biopsy, where scans show it can be removed
- A cancer that has shrunk with chemotherapy given first
- Some women with a very high inherited risk, after counselling
When it is not the right answer
- A breast lump not yet biopsied: the diagnosis comes first, and many lumps are not cancer
- Cancer that has spread widely, where medicines are the main treatment and surgery may not help
- A benign lump such as a fibroadenoma, which is removed with a smaller operation
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation with the surgeon₦50,000
Your examination, mammogram or ultrasound, and biopsy report are reviewed together.
- 2
Tests that plan treatment
Receptor results on the biopsy, staging scans and blood tests.
- 3
A team decision
Surgeon, cancer doctor and radiologist agree the order of treatment: surgery first, or chemotherapy first.
- 4
A written price
The operation and the stay, in writing, before admission.
- 5
The operation
One to three hours under general anaesthetic.
- 6
Recovery in hospital
Often one to three nights, sometimes with a drain.
- 7
Results and next steps₦25,000
The tissue results decide whether chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone tablets follow.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First week
Soreness and tightness in the chest and armpit. Gentle arm exercises start early.
Weeks 2 to 4
Drains out, wound healing. Light work and household tasks return.
After a month
Most women are back to normal activity, unless chemotherapy or radiotherapy is under way. A breast prosthesis can be fitted once the wound has healed.
Risks you should be told about
- Fluid collecting under the wound (seroma), sometimes drained with a needle
- Wound infection
- Bleeding
- Stiffness of the shoulder
- Arm swelling (lymphoedema), more likely after all the armpit glands are removed
- Numbness of the inner arm
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Is removing the whole breast always safer?
Not for every woman. For many early cancers, removing the lump and giving radiotherapy works as well as mastectomy. The right choice depends on the size and position of the cancer, the breast, and whether radiotherapy is available to you.
Does surgery or a biopsy make cancer spread?
No. This fear keeps many Nigerian women away until the cancer is advanced. A biopsy and a properly planned operation do not spread cancer. Delay is what allows it to grow.
Can I have a new breast made?
Often, yes, at the same operation or later. Reconstruction is done by a plastic surgeon and is planned with the cancer team.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
Because the operation, the armpit surgery and the stay differ from woman to woman. You get the price in writing before admission.
