Stomach Cancer Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers theatre time and the stapling equipment, medication and feeding while you are admitted, and analysis of the tissue removed. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

The part of the stomach holding the cancer, or the whole stomach, is removed with the nearby lymph glands, and the gut is joined back together so you can eat. It is a major operation, planned after an endoscopy with biopsy and staging scans, and usually combined with chemotherapy before or after.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant surgical opinion: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has seen your endoscopy, biopsy and scans, because the operation, the stay and any high dependency care change it. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time and the stapling equipment
  • Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay, including high dependency care where planned
  • Medication and feeding while you are admitted
  • Analysis of the tissue removed
  • Dietitian advice before discharge

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • Gastroscopy, biopsy and staging scans
  • Chemotherapy before or after surgery
  • Vitamin B12 injections and supplements after discharge
  • Unplanned intensive care or a return to theatre

What decides your quote

  • Part of the stomach or all of it
  • Keyhole or open surgery
  • Days in high dependency care
  • A feeding tube needed before or after surgery
  • A longer stay than planned

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

How we pick your surgeon

Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • Stomach cancer confirmed by endoscopy and biopsy, where scans show it can be removed
  • Some large or suspicious growths in the stomach wall
  • A stomach blocked or bleeding because of a tumour

When it is not the right answer

  • Indigestion or ulcer symptoms not yet investigated: an endoscopy comes first
  • Cancer that has spread too far for surgery to help, where chemotherapy and comfort care are better
  • Anyone not yet fit for a major operation, until nutrition and fitness are improved

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation with the surgeon₦50,000

Your endoscopy report, biopsy and blood tests are reviewed.

  2. 2

Staging scans and a team review

CT, and sometimes a keyhole look inside the abdomen, then a decision with the cancer doctors on the order of treatment.

  3. 3

    Getting fit for surgery

Nutrition support, treatment of anaemia, and walking to build strength.

  4. 4

    A written price

The operation and the stay, in writing, before admission.

  5. 5

    The operation

Three to five hours under general anaesthetic.

  6. 6

    Recovery in hospital

Usually seven to fourteen days, eating again step by step.

  7. 7

    Results and next steps₦25,000

The tissue results decide what follows, and follow-up continues for years.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First weeks

Small meals six to eight times a day. Feeling full quickly is normal.

Months 1 to 3

Weight loss is common; the dietitian's plan matters. Tiredness lasts weeks.

Long term

Lifelong vitamin B12 after total gastrectomy, and iron and calcium checks. Most people learn a new eating pattern.

Risks you should be told about

  • A leak where the gut is joined, the most serious risk
  • Bleeding and infection
  • Chest infection and blood clots
  • Dumping: dizziness, sweating or diarrhoea after sugary meals
  • Weight loss and vitamin or iron deficiency

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Can I live without a stomach?

Yes. After a total gastrectomy the gullet is joined to the small bowel, and people eat smaller, more frequent meals. It takes months to adjust, with dietitian support and vitamin B12.

I have had ulcer for years. Could it be cancer?

Most indigestion is not cancer. But new indigestion from about forty-five, or indigestion with weight loss, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, anaemia or black stools, needs an endoscopy rather than more antacids.

Why is there no fixed price on this page?

Because the operation, the stay and any high dependency care change the cost many times over. You get the price in writing before admission.
