Lipoma and Lump Removal in Nigeria
A soft fatty lump (lipoma) or a skin cyst is cut out whole under local anaesthetic, and sent to the laboratory to confirm what it was. You are awake, it takes under an hour, and you go home straight after. A cyst has to come out with its lining, or it comes back.

Most lipomas and cysts are recognised by feel. A scan is added for large, deep or unusual lumps.
- 2
Removal under local anaesthetic
Twenty to forty five minutes. The area is numbed, the lump is removed whole, and the skin is stitched.
- 3
Home straight after
With a dressing and written wound care.
- 4
Stitches out and the histology result₦25,000
At ten to fourteen days.
Recovery, realistically
Day 1 to 2
The numbness wears off and there is a mild ache. Keep the dressing dry for forty eight hours.
Week 1 to 2
Normal daily activity. Avoid stretching the wound. Stitches come out at ten to fourteen days.
Months after
The scar fades over months. Tell the surgeon early if it starts to thicken.
Risks you should be told about
- A scar, and keloid in skin prone to it, which is discussed before surgery
- Bleeding or a small collection of blood under the wound
- Infection
- A cyst coming back if any of its lining was left
- A small patch of numb skin
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Can a cyst just be squeezed or drained?
It can be emptied, and it fills again, because the lining that makes it is still there. Removing it whole is what stops it coming back.
Will it leave a scar?
Yes, a line roughly the length of the lump. If you or your family form keloids, say so at the consultation, because it changes where the cut is made and what is done afterwards.
Could it be cancer?
A soft, slow, painless lipoma almost never is. Every lump removed is still sent to the laboratory, and the result is given to you at the review.
Can more than one be removed at once?
Usually yes, at a small extra charge per lump, agreed before the day.
