The four parathyroid glands sit behind the thyroid in the neck and control the calcium in your blood. When one of them grows and becomes overactive, usually from a benign growth called an adenoma, calcium rises and harms the bones and kidneys. Parathyroidectomy removes the overactive gland through a small cut in the neck, and calcium usually returns to normal straight away.

Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has seen your blood tests and scans, because whether one gland or several are involved changes it. It does not move without your written agreement.

Many people feel more energetic and less thirsty within weeks. Bone strength improves over the following year.
Risks you should be told about
- Low calcium after surgery, usually short-lived and treated with tablets
- A hoarse voice from bruising of the voice box nerve, usually temporary
- Bleeding in the neck, which needs urgent attention
- The raised calcium not settling, or coming back, if another gland is overactive
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Is this the same as thyroid surgery?
No. The parathyroids are four tiny separate glands behind the thyroid. Removing an overactive one leaves the thyroid in place, and most people need no lifelong tablets.
Can tablets cure it instead?
Medicines can lower calcium in some people, but they do not remove the overactive gland. Surgery is the only cure for primary hyperparathyroidism.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
