Diabetic Foot Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the surgeon and the anaesthetist, theatre time, and your bed and nursing care for the planned stay. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

Diabetes damages the nerves and blood supply of the feet, so a small wound can go unnoticed, become infected and spread fast. Surgery removes dead and infected tissue (debridement), drains pus, and, when a toe or part of the foot cannot be saved, removes it so the rest of the leg can be. The aim is always to save as much of the foot as possible, with blood sugar control and wound care alongside.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant surgical opinion: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has examined the foot and seen the X-ray and blood tests, because the extent of the infection and the number of operations change it. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The surgeon and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time
  • Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
  • Antibiotics and diabetes care while you are admitted
  • Wound dressings while you are admitted
  • A review with the surgeon after discharge

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • X-ray, scans and blood flow tests
  • Dressings and wound care after discharge
  • Procedures to open blocked leg arteries
  • Special footwear or an artificial limb

What decides your quote

  • Cleaning of the wound only, or removal of a toe or more
  • More than one trip to theatre
  • A longer stay to control infection or blood sugar
  • Vacuum dressings or skin grafting

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

How we pick your surgeon

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First weeks

Keep weight off the foot as advised. Dressings changed regularly.

Weeks to months

Diabetic wounds heal slowly. Good blood sugar, no smoking and keeping off the foot speed healing.

For life

Check both feet every day, wear protective shoes, never walk barefoot, and see a doctor for any new wound.

Risks you should be told about

  • The infection spreading, needing more surgery
  • Slow healing or the wound breaking down
  • Further amputation if blood supply is poor
  • A new ulcer on the same or the other foot
  • Heart, kidney and blood sugar problems during admission

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Does going to hospital mean my leg will be cut off?

No. This fear makes many Nigerians stay at home with herbs and hot water until the foot is lost. Most diabetic foot problems seen early are treated without amputation. Late treatment is what leads to amputation.

Can I soak my foot in hot water or apply herbs?

No. Numb feet cannot feel heat, so hot water burns them, and herbs and powders can worsen infection. Keep the wound clean and covered, and see a doctor.

Why is there no fixed price on this page?

Because the extent of the infection and the number of operations and dressings change the cost. You get the price in writing before a planned admission.
