Hiatus Hernia Repair and Reflux Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. A hiatus hernia is part of the stomach pushed up through the diaphragm into the chest, which lets acid flow back into the gullet. The operation, done by keyhole surgery, brings the stomach back down, tightens the gap in the diaphragm and wraps the top of the stomach around the lower gullet to act as a valve. This is called a fundoplication.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has seen your endoscopy and tests, because the size of the hernia and whether mesh is used change it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time and keyhole equipment
- Your bed for the planned stay, usually one to two nights
- Medication while you are admitted
- A review with the surgeon after discharge
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- Gastroscopy, barium swallow and pressure or acid tests before surgery
- Unplanned intensive care or a return to theatre
What decides your quote
- A large hernia, with much of the stomach in the chest
- A mesh to reinforce the diaphragm
- Conversion from keyhole to open surgery
- A longer stay than planned
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- Reflux confirmed by tests that still troubles you despite a proper course of medicine
- People who do not want, or cannot take, acid-reducing tablets for life
- A large hiatus hernia causing chest pain, vomiting, breathlessness after meals or bleeding
- Reflux with damage to the gullet, such as narrowing or repeated inflammation
When it is not the right answer
- Heartburn that has not been tested with an endoscopy: the diagnosis comes first
- A small hiatus hernia with mild reflux that tablets control well
- Symptoms mainly of bloating or belching without acid reflux, which surgery may worsen

First days
Shoulder-tip pain from the keyhole gas is common. Sips and liquids first.
Weeks 1 to 6
Soft, moist food in small amounts. Swallowing can feel tight; it eases as swelling settles. Avoid bread, rice lumps and dry meat early.
After six weeks
Most people eat normally and stop their reflux tablets. Back to work within two to three weeks for desk work.
Risks you should be told about
- Difficulty swallowing, usually easing within weeks
- Bloating and difficulty belching or vomiting
- The hernia or reflux coming back in later years
- Injury to the gullet, stomach or spleen, uncommon
- Bleeding or infection
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Is reflux the same as ulcer?
No. Many Nigerians call any upper tummy burning ulcer, but reflux is acid rising into the gullet, felt behind the breastbone. An endoscopy tells which it is, and only reflux is helped by this operation.
Will I still need my tablets after surgery?
Most people stop them. Some need a smaller dose again years later.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
Because the size of the hernia and the repair needed change the cost. You get the price in writing before admission.
