Bartholin's Cyst and Abscess Treatment at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the procedure room or theatre, plus your recovery bed for the day. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
The Bartholin's glands sit on each side of the vaginal opening. If a gland's opening is blocked, fluid builds up into a cyst, and if it is infected it becomes a painful abscess. Small painless cysts often need nothing. A cyst that is painful, infected or keeps coming back is drained: either with a small tube left in for a few weeks (a Word catheter), or by making a small permanent opening (marsupialisation). Both are short procedures, and most women go home the same day.
Also called: Bartholin's cyst drainage, Bartholin's abscess drainage, Marsupialisation, Word catheter, Bartholin gland cyst

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant gynaecology opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the gynaecologist has examined you, because drainage under local anaesthetic, a catheter or marsupialisation under general anaesthetic changes it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The gynaecologist and, where needed, the anaesthetist
- The procedure room or theatre
- Your recovery bed for the day
- A review, and removal of the catheter where one is used
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- Swab tests for infection, including sexually transmitted infections
- Antibiotics after discharge
What decides your quote
- Local anaesthetic in clinic, or general anaesthetic in theatre
- A catheter or marsupialisation
- A cyst that has come back after earlier treatment
- Removal of the gland, rarely needed
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.

Soreness and some discharge. Warm baths and simple painkillers help.

Afterwards
Most women have no further trouble, but a cyst can come back.
Risks you should be told about
- The cyst or abscess coming back
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Scarring or discomfort during sex, which is uncommon
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Can I squeeze or drain it myself?
No. That can spread infection. Warm baths and painkillers are safe while you wait to be seen.
Is a Bartholin's cyst a sexually transmitted infection?
No, most are simply a blocked gland. Some abscesses are caused by infections, including sexually transmitted ones, so a swab may be taken.
When is it urgent?
Go to a hospital now if you have a high fever with a fast-spreading painful swelling or you feel very unwell. See a doctor the same day for a lump that is quickly getting bigger and more painful.
