Stress incontinence is leaking urine when the bladder is under pressure: a cough, a sneeze, a laugh, lifting or running. Pelvic floor exercises are the first treatment and help many women. When they are not enough, an operation supports the tube that carries urine out of the bladder. The main operations are colposuspension, which lifts the neck of the bladder with stitches, and a sling made from your own tissue or a tape. Bulking injections are a smaller option for some women.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant gynaecology opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the gynaecologist has examined you, because the operation chosen, the bladder tests needed and whether a prolapse is repaired at the same time change it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time
- Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
- Medication while you are admitted
- Reviews with the surgeon after discharge
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- Bladder pressure tests (urodynamics) and urine tests before surgery
- Pelvic floor physiotherapy
What decides your quote
- Colposuspension, a sling from your own tissue, a tape or bulking injections
- Keyhole or open surgery
- A prolapse repair at the same time
- A longer stay than planned
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon

First days
A catheter may be needed for a day or two until the bladder empties well.
Weeks 1 to 6
No heavy lifting, straining or sex. Treat constipation early.
After six weeks
Back to normal activity for most women. Keep up pelvic floor exercises.
Risks you should be told about
- Difficulty emptying the bladder, sometimes needing a catheter for a while
- New urgency or urge leaking
- Leaking coming back over the years
- Pain, and with tape, the tape wearing into the vagina or bladder, which can need further surgery
- Bleeding and infection
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Is mesh tape safe?
Mesh tape has caused serious long-term problems for some women, and in some countries it is now used only with strict safeguards. Colposuspension and a sling from your own tissue avoid mesh. The surgeon will go through each option with you.
Will surgery fix urge leaking too?
No. Surgery treats leaking on effort. Leaking with a sudden urge is a different problem, treated with bladder training and medicines.
Can I just do the exercises?
Yes, and for many women they are enough. Surgery is for leaking that is still a problem after a proper course of exercises.
