VVF and Obstetric Fistula Repair at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the surgeon and the anaesthetist, theatre time, and medication while you are admitted. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

An obstetric fistula is a hole between the birth canal and the bladder (VVF) or the back passage (RVF), most often left by a long, blocked labour. It causes constant leaking, and it is not the woman's fault. In most women it can be closed with an operation, usually through the vagina, and the leaking stops. The repair is planned by a surgeon who does this work, with a catheter and nursing care afterwards while the tissue heals.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant gynaecology opinion: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the gynaecologist has examined you, because the size and position of the fistula, and whether it has been repaired before, change the operation and the stay. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The surgeon and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time
  • Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay, including catheter care
  • Medication while you are admitted
  • Reviews with the surgeon after discharge

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • Dye tests, scans or cystoscopy done before the day of surgery
  • Treating infection or anaemia found at the first visit
  • A second operation, if the first repair does not fully close the fistula

What decides your quote

  • A fistula into the bladder, the back passage or both
  • A large fistula, or one close to the ureters, which may need a urologist as well
  • A previous repair that did not hold
  • A longer stay than planned

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

How we pick your surgeon

Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • Constant leaking of urine from the vagina after a long or difficult labour
  • Stool or wind passing through the vagina after childbirth
  • Leaking that began after a caesarean section, hysterectomy or another pelvic operation
  • A fistula repaired before that still leaks

When it is not the right answer

  • The first weeks after the injury, when a catheter alone can sometimes let a small fistula close, and the tissue is not ready for surgery
  • Leaking only when you cough or sneeze, which is stress incontinence and has its own treatment
  • Anyone not yet fit for an operation, until infection, anaemia or poor nutrition are treated

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    A private consultation₦50,000

The gynaecologist listens, examines you gently and explains what can be done. Nothing is shared without your agreement.

  2. 2

    Tests to map the fistula

A dye test, and sometimes a cystoscopy or scan, to find exactly where the hole is.

  3. 3

    Getting ready

Treating any infection, building up your blood and nutrition, and caring for sore skin.

  4. 4

    A written price

The operation and the stay, in writing, before a date is set.

  5. 5

    The repair

Usually through the vagina under a spinal or general anaesthetic. The layers are separated and closed.

  6. 6

    Recovery in hospital

A catheter stays in for about two weeks while the bladder heals, with plenty to drink.

  7. 7

    Follow-up₦25,000

Checks that the repair has held, and advice for any future pregnancy.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First two weeks

The catheter drains the bladder. Drink plenty and keep the catheter free of kinks.

Weeks 2 to 12

No sex and no heavy lifting while the repair strengthens. Pelvic floor exercises once the surgeon agrees.

Afterwards

A future baby is usually delivered by planned caesarean section to protect the repair.

Risks you should be told about

  • The fistula not closing fully, needing a second operation
  • Some leaking when coughing or rushing, even after a closed repair, which can be treated
  • Urine infection
  • Bleeding
  • Narrowing of the vagina

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Can a VVF really be repaired?

Yes. Most obstetric fistulas can be closed with surgery, and many women are dry afterwards. A fistula that has been there for years can still be repaired.

Did I cause this?

No. A fistula is an injury from a labour that went on too long without help in time. It is not a curse, a punishment or something you did.

Can I have another baby after the repair?

Many women do. The surgeon will usually advise waiting until the repair has healed fully, and a planned caesarean section for the delivery.

Why is there no fixed price on this page?

Because each fistula is different in size and position, and that changes the operation and the stay. You get the price in writing before a date is set.
