Cervical Cerclage, the Cervical Stitch at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the obstetrician and the anaesthetist, theatre time, and removal of the stitch later in pregnancy. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

A cervical stitch is a strong thread placed around the neck of the womb to help keep it closed during pregnancy. It is offered to women at higher risk of a late miscarriage or an early birth because the cervix opens too soon: after a previous late loss, a short cervix on scan, or some earlier treatments to the cervix. It is usually placed through the vagina between about twelve and twenty-four weeks, and removed at about thirty-six to thirty-seven weeks.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant gynaecology opinion: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the gynaecologist has examined you, because the timing, the type of stitch and the anaesthetic change it. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The obstetrician and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time
  • Your recovery bed, and an overnight stay where planned
  • Removal of the stitch later in pregnancy

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • Antenatal care and scans, including cervical length scans
  • Admission for threatened early labour
  • The delivery

What decides your quote

  • A planned stitch early in pregnancy, or an emergency stitch when the cervix is already opening
  • A stitch placed through the tummy, which is a larger operation
  • An overnight stay

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

How we pick your surgeon

Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • A previous late miscarriage or early birth thought to be caused by the cervix opening too soon

  • Some women who have had a cone biopsy, LLETZ or other treatment to the cervix, after review

When it is not the right answer

  • Signs of infection, bleeding or contractions
  • Waters that have already broken
  • Most twin pregnancies, unless your obstetrician advises it for a specific reason
  • A first early birth with no other risk, where progesterone and monitoring may be advised instead

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation with an obstetrician₦50,000

Your past pregnancies, any cervical treatment, and whether a stitch would help.

  2. 2

    Cervical length scans

In some women, scans every week or two decide whether the stitch is needed.

  3. 3

    A written price

The stitch, the stay and its removal, in writing, before a date is set.

  4. 4

    The stitch

Through the vagina under a spinal or general anaesthetic, about twenty to thirty minutes.

  5. 5

    Removal

At about thirty-six to thirty-seven weeks, usually quick and without an anaesthetic, or earlier if labour starts.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First days

Light bleeding and cramping are common. Rest and avoid sex until your obstetrician agrees.

Rest of pregnancy

Regular antenatal checks. Most women carry on daily life.

Removal

Labour can start naturally afterwards, or you continue to term.

Risks you should be told about

  • Bleeding or infection
  • Waters breaking early
  • The stitch not preventing a late miscarriage or early birth
  • Injury to the cervix if labour starts with the stitch in place

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

When should I go to hospital with a stitch?

Go to a hospital now if you have regular contractions, your waters break, you bleed, or you have fever or smelly discharge. The stitch may need to be removed quickly.

Will I need a caesarean section?

Not because of the stitch. It is removed before labour and most women can deliver vaginally, unless there is another reason for a caesarean.

Can I have it before I get pregnant?

A stitch placed through the tummy can be done before pregnancy for some women whose vaginal stitch has failed. Your obstetrician will advise.
