LLETZ (LEEP) and Cone Biopsy of the Cervix at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the procedure room or theatre, analysis of the tissue removed, and a results appointment with the gynaecologist. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
When a smear or HPV test finds abnormal cells, a colposcopy looks closely at the cervix. If the cells could turn into cancer over the years, they are removed. LLETZ (also called LEEP) uses a thin heated wire loop under local anaesthetic and takes about fifteen minutes. A cone biopsy removes a larger, cone-shaped piece, usually under general anaesthetic. Both stop precancer from becoming cancer in most women, and the tissue is checked in the laboratory.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant gynaecology opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the gynaecologist has examined you, because whether you need a colposcopy first, LLETZ under local anaesthetic or a cone biopsy under general anaesthetic changes it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The gynaecologist and, for a cone biopsy, the anaesthetist
- The procedure room or theatre
- Analysis of the tissue removed
- A results appointment with the gynaecologist
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- The smear or HPV test that found the abnormal cells
- Follow-up smear or HPV tests in the months after treatment
What decides your quote
- LLETZ under local anaesthetic, or a cone biopsy under general anaesthetic
- A colposcopy and biopsy before treatment, if not already done
- An overnight stay after a cone biopsy
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- Abnormal cells on the cervix that a colposcopy or biopsy shows could become cancer (CIN 2 or CIN 3)
- Persistent low-grade changes with a positive HPV test, where your gynaecologist advises treatment
- Abnormal glandular cells, which often need a cone biopsy
When it is not the right answer
- Mild changes that often clear on their own, which are watched with repeat tests
- Cervical cancer already confirmed, which needs a cancer team
- Pregnancy, when treatment is usually delayed until after the birth unless cancer is suspected

Recovery, realistically
First days
Mild period-like pain. Simple painkillers help.
Up to four weeks
Bleeding or discharge is normal. Use pads, not tampons, and avoid sex and swimming for about four weeks.
Six months
A repeat smear or HPV test checks the cells have gone.
Risks you should be told about
- Bleeding, sometimes heavy, in the first two weeks
- Infection, with smelly discharge or pain
- Abnormal cells coming back, needing further treatment
- A slightly higher chance of an early birth in a future pregnancy, more so after a larger cone biopsy
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Does an abnormal smear mean I have cancer?
Almost always no. Abnormal cells are a warning sign years before cancer could develop. Treating them now is how cervical cancer is prevented.
Will LLETZ affect my fertility?
It does not affect your ability to get pregnant. A larger treatment can slightly raise the chance of an early birth, so tell your antenatal team you have had it.
When should I go to hospital after treatment?
Go to a hospital now for heavy bleeding with clots, or bleeding with dizziness. See a doctor soon for smelly discharge or pain that painkillers do not help.
