Ovarian Cyst Removal in Nigeria
A cyst is removed from the ovary and, wherever it is possible, the ovary itself is kept. Most ovarian cysts found on a scan need nothing at all, which is the first thing worth establishing.

₦790,000
What would change this price
- Removal of the whole ovary where the cyst cannot be separated from it
- A finding that needs cancer surgery, which changes the operation entirely and is discussed before you consent
- Both ovaries treated, priced separately above
- A longer stay than the expected two to three nights
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
Who this is for
- A cyst larger than about five centimetres that is not resolving
- A cyst causing persistent pain or pressure
- A cyst with features on the scan that need histology to settle
- A cyst that has twisted, which is an emergency
- A raised CA125 alongside a cyst, which needs assessing properly
When it is not the right answer
- A simple cyst under five centimetres in a woman still having periods, which usually resolves on its own within a few cycles
- A cyst found by chance on a scan with no symptoms, in most cases
- Anyone who has not yet had a repeat scan to see whether it is settling
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Scan and consultation together₦35,000
Pelvic ultrasound and the consultant appointment in one visit. Most cysts need watching rather than removing, and that is decided here.
- 2
A repeat scan, where watching is the right answer
Rescanning after a cycle or two avoids a great many unnecessary operations.
- 3
Bloods including tumour markers where indicated
Only where the scan raises a question, and explained to you before it is sent.
- 4
The operation
One to two hours under general anaesthetic. The cyst is removed and the ovary preserved where it can be.
- 5
Two to three nights in hospital
Shorter if the operation was done by keyhole.
- 6
Review at six weeks, with your histology₦25,000
Results explained in person.
Recovery, realistically
Days 1 to 3
In hospital. Up and walking from day one.
Week 1 to 2
At home, sore across the wound. No lifting, no driving.
Week 2 to 4
Most women return to desk work within two to four weeks.
Week 6 onwards
Full activity. Fertility is unaffected where the ovary was preserved.
Risks you should be told about
- Removal of the whole ovary where the cyst cannot be separated from healthy tissue
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Adhesions forming inside the abdomen
- A new cyst forming later, which is common and usually needs nothing
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Does every ovarian cyst need removing?
No, and most do not. Simple cysts under five centimetres in a woman still having periods usually resolve within a few cycles. A repeat scan is the right next step far more often than an operation is.
Will I still be able to have children?
Yes, where the ovary is preserved, which is the aim. Even with one ovary removed, fertility is usually maintained.
Could it be cancer?
Most cysts are not. The scan appearance, your age and blood tests together tell us how likely that is, and you are told honestly rather than reassured or frightened.
Can it be done by keyhole?
Often, and it means a shorter stay and faster recovery. Very large cysts and anything suspicious are usually better done open.
