Hysteroscopy in Nigeria

A thin telescope is passed through the neck of the womb so the inside can be seen directly, with no cuts. Polyps, small fibroids in the cavity, a dividing wall and scar tissue can be removed at the same time. It is a day case.

Operative hysteroscopy: polyp, small fibroid, septum or adhesions

₦500,000

What would change this price

  • A polyp, fibroid, septum or adhesions found and treated at the same sitting, which moves to the operative rate, agreed with you beforehand
  • A fibroid in the cavity larger than about three centimetres, which may need two sittings
  • An overnight stay, occasionally needed

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Who this is for

  • Heavy, irregular or bleeding between periods that a scan has not explained
  • Bleeding after the menopause
  • Difficulty conceiving or repeated miscarriage, with a polyp, fibroid, dividing wall or scar tissue suspected on a scan
  • Scanty or absent periods after a D&C or an infection, which can mean scar tissue inside the womb
  • A coil that cannot be found or removed

When it is not the right answer

  • Any chance of pregnancy, which is excluded first
  • An active pelvic infection, until it has been treated
  • Fibroids within the wall of the womb rather than its cavity, which need a myomectomy instead

Recovery, realistically

Day 1 to 2

Cramps and light bleeding. Most women are back at work in a day or two.

Week 1 to 2

Bleeding settles. No sex until it stops.

After treatment for scar tissue

A follow-up scan or second look may be planned to stop it re-forming.

Risks you should be told about

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • A small hole in the wall of the womb, rare
  • Fluid absorbed during a long operative procedure, which is measured throughout
  • Scar tissue re-forming after it has been removed

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Is it painful?

Under a short anaesthetic you feel nothing during it. Afterwards there are period-like cramps for a day or so.

Will it help me get pregnant?

If it finds and removes a polyp, a fibroid in the cavity, a dividing wall or scar tissue, it can improve the chances. If the cavity is normal, it has answered a question rather than fixed a problem. You will be told which.

How is it different from an HSG?

An HSG is an X-ray dye test that mainly checks the tubes. A hysteroscopy looks directly inside the womb and can treat what it finds.
