An ectopic pregnancy grows outside the womb, almost always in a fallopian tube. It cannot become a baby, and as it grows it can burst the tube and bleed inside the tummy. Some are treated with close monitoring or an injection of methotrexate. Many need surgery, usually keyhole, to remove the pregnancy with the affected tube (salpingectomy), or occasionally to open the tube and keep it (salpingostomy). A burst ectopic is an emergency operation.
Also called: Salpingectomy, Salpingostomy, Laparoscopy for ectopic pregnancy, Ruptured ectopic surgery, Tubal pregnancy surgery

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant gynaecology opinion: from ₦50,000
For a stable, planned case, your price is a written quote after the gynaecologist has seen your scan and blood tests. An emergency is treated first at the nearest hospital, never delayed for a quote.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time and keyhole equipment
- Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
- Medication while you are admitted
- Analysis of the tissue removed
- A review after the operation
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- Pregnancy hormone (hCG) blood tests and scans before and after
- Blood transfusion, if needed
- Methotrexate treatment, where that is chosen instead of surgery
What decides your quote
- A burst tube with bleeding, needing an emergency or open operation
- Blood transfusion
- Removing the tube or keeping it
- A longer stay than planned
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- An ectopic pregnancy seen on scan that is large, painful or has a heartbeat
- Pregnancy hormone levels that stay high or rise despite an ectopic on scan
- Signs that the tube has burst or is bleeding
- Women for whom methotrexate is not safe or has not worked
When it is not the right answer
- A small ectopic with low and falling hormone levels, which may settle with monitoring or an injection
- A pregnancy of unknown location without a clear ectopic, which is followed with repeat blood tests and scans first
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Emergency first
Severe pain, fainting or heavy bleeding: the nearest hospital emergency department, now.
- 2
Consultation, scan and blood tests₦50,000
For a stable woman, a vaginal scan and hCG blood tests to confirm where the pregnancy is.
- 3
Choosing the treatment
Monitoring, methotrexate or surgery, explained with the effect on future fertility.
- 4
The operation
Usually keyhole under general anaesthetic, and home in one or two days.
- 5
Follow-up₦25,000
Results, how you are coping, and the plan for a future pregnancy, including an early scan.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First week
Tummy and shoulder tip soreness after keyhole surgery. Rest, and walk a little each day.
Weeks 2 to 6
Most women return to work within two to six weeks. Bleeding like a light period is normal for a while.
Emotional recovery
Losing a pregnancy is a loss, whatever the medical name. Grief, guilt and anxiety are common, and support helps.
Next pregnancy
Most women can try again after one or two periods. An early scan confirms the next pregnancy is in the womb.
Risks you should be told about
- Bleeding, sometimes needing a transfusion
- Infection
- Injury to nearby organs during surgery, which is rare
- Some pregnancy tissue left behind after salpingostomy, needing further treatment
- A higher chance of another ectopic in a future pregnancy
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Can an ectopic pregnancy be moved into the womb?
No. It is not possible to move it, and it cannot grow into a baby. Treatment is about keeping you safe and protecting your fertility.
Can I get pregnant with one tube?
Yes. Many women conceive naturally with one healthy tube. The chance depends on the health of the other tube and your age.
Was it something I did?
No. An ectopic is not caused by work, exercise or sex. Some things raise the risk, such as past pelvic infection or tube surgery, but often no cause is found.
