Tubal Ligation, Female Sterilisation at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the surgeon and the anaesthetist, theatre time and the clips or equipment used, and your recovery bed for the day. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

Tubal ligation is permanent contraception for women who are sure they want no more children. The fallopian tubes are blocked with clips, tied and cut, or removed, so eggs cannot meet sperm. It is usually a keyhole operation through two small cuts, and most women go home the same day. It can also be done during a caesarean section. It does not change your periods or your hormones.

Also called: Female sterilisation, Tying the tubes, Bilateral tubal ligation (BTL), Laparoscopic sterilisation, Salpingectomy for sterilisation

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant gynaecology opinion: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the gynaecologist has examined you, because the method, the anaesthetic and whether it is done on its own or with another operation change it. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The surgeon and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time and the clips or equipment used
  • Your recovery bed for the day
  • A review after the operation

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • A pregnancy test and any tests before surgery
  • An overnight stay, if one is needed

What decides your quote

  • Clips, tying or removing the tubes
  • Keyhole surgery or a small open cut
  • Doing it at the same time as a caesarean section or another operation

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

How we pick your surgeon

Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • Women who are certain they do not want any more children, now or in the future
  • Women for whom another pregnancy would be dangerous to their health
  • Women having a planned caesarean section who have decided, well before the day, on sterilisation

When it is not the right answer

  • Anyone unsure, or deciding under pressure from a partner or family
  • Women who may want children with a new partner later
  • Anyone who wants contraception that can be stopped: the implant and the coil work as well and can be removed

Your reasons, the other options, and the fact that this is meant to be permanent, discussed openly.

  3. 3

  4. 4

    The operation

Usually keyhole under general anaesthetic, about thirty minutes. Keep using contraception until then.

  5. 5

    Review₦25,000

A check on the small wounds and any questions.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First days

Tummy and shoulder tip soreness from the gas used in keyhole surgery is common and settles.

Week 1

Most women are back to light work within a few days. Sex when it feels comfortable.

Contraception

Keep using contraception until your next period after clips are applied, as advised by the surgeon.

Risks you should be told about

  • A small chance of pregnancy later, which is more likely to be in a tube (ectopic) if it happens
  • Bleeding or infection
  • Injury to the bowel, bladder or blood vessels during keyhole surgery, which is rare
  • Regret, which is why the decision is never rushed

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Can tubal ligation be reversed?

It is meant to be permanent. Reversal is a difficult operation that often does not work, and is impossible when the tubes have been removed. Only choose sterilisation if you are sure.

Will it bring on menopause or change my periods?

No. Your ovaries and hormones are not touched. Periods carry on as they would have without your contraception.

Is a vasectomy an option instead?

Yes. Sterilisation for a man is a smaller operation under local anaesthetic, if it suits you both.

When should I see a doctor after sterilisation?

Go to a hospital now if you have a positive pregnancy test with tummy pain or bleeding, as a pregnancy after sterilisation is more likely to be ectopic.
