Obstetrics and Gynaecology
D&C in Nigeria
The neck of the womb is gently widened and tissue is removed from the lining under a short anaesthetic. It is done to clear the womb after an incomplete miscarriage, and to sample the lining when bleeding is abnormal. It is a day case.
Also called: Dilatation and curettage, D and C, Evacuation of retained products (ERPC), Uterine evacuation

Home the same day. Histology included.
What the price covers
- Gynaecologist and anaesthetist
- Theatre time and a short anaesthetic or sedation
- Histology on the tissue removed
- Recovery on the day unit
- Routine medication on the day
What it does not cover
- The first consultation and the scan that shows what is needed
- An anti-D injection, needed after a miscarriage if your blood group is rhesus negative
- Treating an infection or heavy bleeding that needs admission
What would change this price
- A hysteroscopy at the same sitting, priced on the hysteroscopy page
- An overnight stay, occasionally needed
- An anti-D injection for a rhesus negative woman
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
Who this is for
- Pregnancy tissue left in the womb after a miscarriage, causing bleeding or not passing on its own
- Heavy or irregular bleeding where the lining needs sampling
- A thickened lining seen on a scan
When it is not the right answer
- An incomplete miscarriage that can be managed with tablets or by waiting, which many women prefer and which your doctor should offer
- Bleeding after the menopause, where a hysteroscopy with a biopsy looks directly instead of sampling blind
- Any pregnancy that may still be continuing, which a scan must rule out first
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation and pelvic scan₦35,000
The scan confirms what is in the womb and whether a procedure is needed at all.
- 2
Bloods and blood group
A blood count, and your blood group, because a rhesus negative woman needs an anti-D injection after a miscarriage.
- 3
The procedure
Ten to twenty minutes under a short anaesthetic or sedation. No cuts are made.
- 4
Home the same day
After a few hours' rest, with someone to take you home.
- 5
Result and review₦25,000
The histology result explained, and the next steps.
Recovery, realistically
Day 1 to 2
Period-like cramps and light bleeding. Simple painkillers help.
Week 1 to 2
Bleeding settles. No sex, tampons or swimming until it stops, to lower the chance of infection.
Weeks 4 to 6
Your next period usually arrives within four to six weeks.
Risks you should be told about
- Infection, which shows as fever, pain or smelly discharge and needs treating promptly
- Heavy bleeding
- Some tissue left behind, occasionally needing a repeat procedure
- A small hole in the wall of the womb, rare
- Scarring inside the womb, uncommon, and more likely after repeated procedures
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Will it affect my chance of getting pregnant?
A single D&C does not usually affect fertility. Scarring inside the womb is uncommon, and is the reason repeated procedures are avoided where tablets or waiting would do.
When can we try again after a miscarriage?
Once you feel ready, usually after your next period. There is no medical reason to wait longer after an uncomplicated miscarriage.
Is a D&C the same as a hysteroscopy?
No. A hysteroscopy uses a thin camera to look inside the womb. A D&C samples or clears the lining without looking. They are sometimes done together.
