Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder causes episodes of depression and episodes of mania or hypomania: days or weeks of unusually high energy, little need for sleep, racing thoughts and risky decisions. Between episodes many people are completely well. With the right long-term treatment most people with bipolar disorder work, raise families and live full lives.

Common Questions
Is bipolar disorder the same as having mood swings?
No. Everyone's mood varies. In bipolar disorder the highs and lows are episodes lasting days or weeks, they are severe enough to disrupt life, and they need medical treatment.
Will I need medication for life?
Many people do take a mood stabiliser long term, because it greatly reduces the risk of new episodes. It is a decision you make with your psychiatrist, reviewed over time.
