Children should see a dentist once their first teeth come through, and then as often as the dentist advises. Visits are short and gentle, with the aim that your child is comfortable in the chair. The dentist checks for decay, can protect teeth with fluoride varnish and fissure sealants, and treats decay in baby teeth when it is found.
Also called: paediatric dentistry, children's dentist, kids dentist

What happens, step by step
- 1
Getting comfortable
The dentist talks to your child first. Small children can sit on your lap.
- 2
Examination
A look at every tooth and the gums. X-rays are taken only when needed.
- 3
Prevention
Fluoride varnish and, on back adult teeth, fissure sealants can help protect against decay.
- 4
Treatment, if needed
Decay is explained to you with the options and the price, and treated in short visits your child can manage.
Afterwards
At home
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, a smear for under-threes and a pea-sized amount from three to six, and help until about age seven.
Next visit
The dentist tells you when to come back, often every six months for children.
Risks you should be told about
- Some children are anxious; visits are kept short, and you stay with your child
- A filled baby tooth can still need further treatment or removal
The dentist goes through the risks for your own mouth before you agree to treatment, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
When should my child first see a dentist?
Once the first teeth come through, and by the first birthday. Early visits are mostly about getting used to the dentist and advice for you.
Do baby teeth need filling if they will fall out?
Often, yes. Decay in a baby tooth can cause pain and infection and can affect the adult tooth underneath. The dentist explains the options.
Can I stay with my child?
Yes. A parent or guardian stays with the child throughout.
