A check-up is a look at every tooth, your gums and the rest of your mouth, with an X-ray if the dentist needs one. A scale and polish removes the hard deposit (tartar) that brushing cannot. What happens, step by step

A few questions
Your health, any medicines you take, and anything bothering you in your mouth.

The examination
The dentist checks each tooth, your gums, tongue, cheeks and bite. An X-ray is taken only if it is needed to see between or under the teeth.

Scale and polish
Tartar is removed with hand instruments or an ultrasonic scaler, then the teeth are polished. It can feel scratchy but should not hurt.

If anything needs treatment, the dentist explains it and you are given the price before you agree. Nothing is done without your agreement.
Afterwards
The same day
Your gums may feel tender and bleed a little for a day or two after a scale, especially if there was a lot of tartar.
Your next check-up
The dentist tells you when to come back, based on your own teeth and gums. For many adults it is between six months and two years.
Risks you should be told about
- Mild gum tenderness and bleeding for a day or two after a scale
- Short-lived sensitivity to cold once tartar is removed from exposed roots
- X-rays use a very small dose of radiation; tell the dentist if you are pregnant
The dentist goes through the risks for your own mouth before you agree to treatment, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
How often should I have a dental check-up?
It depends on your teeth and gums, so the dentist sets it. Guidance in the UK puts the gap for adults anywhere from three months to two years, and shorter for people with active decay or gum disease.
Does scaling damage the teeth?
No. Scaling removes tartar, not tooth. Teeth can feel different afterwards, and sometimes a little sensitive, because the tartar that covered them has gone.
How long does a check-up take?
Usually about thirty minutes, a little longer with a scale and polish.
Can I bring my child to the same appointment?
Yes. Tell the coordinator when you ask for the call back and both appointments are booked together.
