Whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth with a bleaching gel. It should be done or supervised by a dentist, after a check-up, because whitening on decayed teeth or diseased gums can cause pain and harm. It does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or dentures. If whitening is not right for your teeth, the dentist tells you at the check-up.

What happens, step by step

Check-up
The dentist checks for decay and gum disease and whether whitening will work on your teeth. Surface stains may only need a scale and polish.

Whitening
Either a gel applied in the chair, or custom trays you wear at home with a gel the dentist supplies, for a set number of days.

Review
The dentist checks the result and any sensitivity.
Afterwards
The first days
Sensitivity to cold is common and usually settles within a few days.
Over time
The effect fades. Tea, coffee and smoking bring the staining back sooner.
Risks you should be told about
- Tooth sensitivity and gum irritation, usually short-lived
- Uneven results where there are fillings or crowns, which do not whiten
- Products sold outside a dental practice may be stronger or weaker than they claim
The dentist goes through the risks for your own mouth before you agree to treatment, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
Is teeth whitening safe?
When a dentist checks your teeth first and supervises the bleaching, it is generally safe. Whitening done by people who are not dental professionals carries more risk.
How long does whitening last?
It varies, commonly from a few months to a few years, and depends a great deal on what you eat, drink and smoke.
Will it whiten my crowns or fillings?
No. Only natural teeth lighten, so a crown or filling at the front may need replacing to match afterwards.
