A crown is a cap that covers a weak or broken tooth, often after root canal treatment. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by fixing a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. Both are made to fit in a dental laboratory, so they take two visits or more. The price depends on the material and the number of units, and you are told it before the tooth is prepared.

What happens, step by step

Examination and plan
The dentist checks the tooth and the teeth around it, may take an X-ray, and explains the material options and the price of each.

Preparation
Under local anaesthetic the tooth is shaped, an impression is taken and a temporary crown is fitted.

Fitting
When the laboratory returns the crown or bridge, it is tried in, adjusted and fixed in place.
Afterwards
The first few days
The tooth may be sensitive. If the bite feels high, come back to have it adjusted.
Long term
Clean around the crown carefully, and under a bridge with floss threaders or small brushes.
Risks you should be told about
- Sensitivity after the tooth is prepared
- The nerve of a prepared tooth can occasionally die and need root canal treatment
- A crown can come loose or the porcelain can chip
- Decay can start where the crown meets the tooth if it is not kept clean
The dentist goes through the risks for your own mouth before you agree to treatment, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
Which crown material is best?
Porcelain fused to metal is strong and widely used. All-ceramic and zirconia crowns look more natural and cost more. Full metal crowns are the strongest but show. The dentist advises on the tooth, and you choose with the prices in front of you.
How long does a crown take?
Usually two visits, a week or two apart, while the laboratory makes the crown.
Bridge or implant for a missing tooth?
A bridge needs the teeth either side to be crowned. An implant does not touch them but needs enough bone and costs more. See dentures or implants for the comparison.
My crown has come off. What should I do?
Keep the crown, keep the area clean and book an appointment. It can often be re-fixed if the tooth underneath is sound.
