Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose nerve is infected or dying, instead of taking it out. The dentist removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and seals the root canals, and then restores the tooth, often with a crown on a back tooth. It usually takes one to three visits. The price depends on which tooth it is, because back teeth have more canals.

What happens, step by step

Examination and X-ray
The dentist confirms the nerve is involved and that the tooth can be saved. If it cannot, you are told, and extraction is the alternative.

Cleaning the canals
Under local anaesthetic the infected nerve is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped. A temporary filling closes the tooth between visits if needed.

Sealing
Once the tooth is settled the canals are filled and sealed.

Restoring the tooth
The tooth is filled, and a back tooth usually needs a crown to protect it from breaking. You are given the price of the crown before you agree.
Afterwards
The first few days
The tooth may be tender to bite on. Simple painkillers usually help.
Until the final restoration
Avoid chewing hard food on that tooth until it has its permanent filling or crown.
Long term
A root-filled tooth can last many years if it is protected and kept clean.
Risks you should be told about
- Tenderness for a few days after each visit
- The infection may not clear completely, and the tooth may later need retreatment or removal
- A root-filled back tooth without a crown is more likely to crack
- Rarely, a small instrument can break inside a curved canal

Is root canal treatment painful?
It is done under local anaesthetic and should feel much like a filling. The pain people remember is usually the toothache before treatment, which the treatment relieves.
How many visits does a root canal take?
Usually one to three, depending on the tooth and the infection. The dentist tells you at the first visit.
How much does a root canal cost in Lagos?
It depends on the tooth: a front tooth has one canal, a molar three or four, so a molar costs more. The price on this page is read from the Mezo catalogue, and your price is confirmed after the examination. A crown, if needed, is priced separately.
Is it better to remove the tooth?
Keeping your own tooth is usually better for chewing and for the teeth around it. Removal is cheaper on the day, but replacing the tooth later can cost more than saving it. The dentist explains both.
