A filling replaces the part of a tooth lost to decay or a small break. The dentist removes the decay, then fills the space with a tooth-coloured material (composite or glass ionomer) or with amalgam, the silver-coloured metal filling. The price depends on the material and how many surfaces of the tooth are filled, and you are told it before the work starts.

What happens, step by step

Examination
The dentist looks at the tooth and may take a small X-ray to see how deep the decay goes.

Numbing
A local anaesthetic injection numbs the tooth, so the filling should not hurt.

Decay removed
The decay is cleaned out and the tooth is shaped to hold the filling.

The filling
Tooth-coloured material is placed in layers and set with a light; amalgam is packed in and shaped. Your bite is checked before you leave.
Afterwards
The first few hours
The numbness wears off over two to four hours. Avoid hot drinks and chewing on that side until it has.
The first week
Some sensitivity to cold is common and settles. If the tooth feels high when you bite, come back so the filling can be adjusted.
Risks you should be told about
- Sensitivity to cold or biting for a few days
- If decay is very deep, the nerve may later become inflamed and need root canal treatment
- Fillings wear and can chip or come out over the years
The dentist goes through the risks for your own mouth before you agree to treatment, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
Which is better, a tooth-coloured or an amalgam filling?
Both work. Tooth-coloured fillings match the tooth and are used on front teeth and, increasingly, back teeth. Amalgam is hard-wearing on back teeth. The dentist tells you which suits the tooth, and the price of each, before starting.
Does a filling hurt?
The tooth is numbed first, so you should feel pressure and vibration but not pain. Tell the dentist if you feel anything sharp.
How long does a filling last?
Many years, if you keep the tooth clean. How long depends on its size, the material, and how hard you bite.
Can a filling be done the same day as the check-up?
Often, yes, if there is time in the appointment and you agree the price. A large filling may be booked as a separate visit.
