A denture is a removable plate of false teeth. A partial denture fills one or more gaps and clips to your own teeth; a complete denture replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Acrylic dentures are the most common; flexible dentures bend slightly and have no metal clasps; cobalt-chrome dentures are thinner and stronger. It usually takes several visits, and you are told the price before the impressions are taken.

What happens, step by step

Examination
The dentist checks your gums and remaining teeth and explains the type of denture that suits you, flexible included, with the price.

Impressions
Moulds of your mouth are taken so the laboratory can make the denture to fit.

Try-in
You see and try the teeth in wax before the denture is finished, so the shape and colour can be changed.

Fitting and review
The finished denture is fitted and adjusted. You come back after a week or two so sore spots can be eased.
Afterwards
The first weeks
Speaking and eating feel strange at first. Start with soft food cut small, and read aloud to get used to it.
Every day
Take the denture out at night, clean it with a soft brush, and keep it in water so it does not dry and warp.
Risks you should be told about
- Sore spots on the gum until the denture is adjusted
- Dentures loosen over time as the gums shrink and may need relining or replacing
- Poor cleaning can cause thrush under the denture or decay on the teeth it clips to

Questions people ask
Flexible or acrylic denture?
Flexible dentures have no metal clasps and can be more comfortable for a partial denture, but are harder to repair or add to. Acrylic dentures are easy to adjust and repair. The dentist explains which suits your mouth.
How long does it take to get a denture?
Usually three to five visits over a few weeks, because the laboratory makes each stage.
Can my broken denture be repaired?
Often, yes. Bring it to the appointment with any broken pieces.
Dentures or implants?
