PCNL, Keyhole Surgery for Large Kidney Stones at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the urologist and the anaesthetist, your bed and nursing care for the planned stay, and reviews with the urologist after the operation. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

A narrow tube is passed through a small cut in the back straight into the kidney, and the stone is broken up and removed through it. It is the usual operation for kidney stones larger than about two centimetres, for branching staghorn stones, and for stones other treatments have not cleared. Most people stay one to three nights.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant urology opinion: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the urologist has seen your CT scan, because the size and shape of the stone decide the operation and the stay. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The urologist and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time, X-ray guidance and the stone-breaking equipment
  • Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
  • A drainage tube or stent, and its removal
  • Analysis of the stone, so prevention advice fits what it is made of
  • Reviews with the urologist after the operation

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • The CT scan, urine culture and blood tests before surgery
  • Draining an infected, blocked kidney first, if needed
  • A second session for stone left behind, planned in advance

What decides your quote

  • A staghorn stone or more than one stone
  • A second operation to clear what is left
  • Infection that has to be treated first
  • A longer stay than planned

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First days

Sore in the back and some blood in the urine, both expected. Walking from the first day.

Weeks 1 to 2

Back to desk work for most people. No heavy lifting.

Weeks 2 to 4

Back to normal activity. Drinking enough to keep your urine pale matters from now on.

Risks you should be told about

  • Bleeding, occasionally needing a transfusion or a procedure to stop it
  • Infection, including fever after surgery
  • Fragments left behind that need another treatment
  • Urine leaking from the cut in the back for a few days
  • Injury to the bowel, lung lining or nearby organs, rare

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
