Orchidectomy, Removal of a Testicle at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the urologist and the anaesthetist, theatre time, and analysis of the tissue removed. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
A testicle is removed through a cut in the groin. It is both the diagnosis and the main treatment for a testicular tumour: a testicle suspected of cancer is not biopsied through the scrotum, it is removed whole and examined. A different operation, removing the inner tissue of both testicles, is a one-off hormone treatment for advanced prostate cancer and an alternative to years of injections. A silicone implant can be offered. Most men go home the same day.

Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A solid lump in a testicle that the scan and blood tests suggest is a tumour
- Advanced prostate cancer, where a man chooses surgery over long-term hormone injections
- A testicle destroyed by torsion, injury or severe infection
When it is not the right answer
- Fluid swellings, which are usually a hydrocele or a cyst and are repaired, not removed
- Swollen veins in the scrotum, which are a varicocele
- An infected, tender testicle that settles with antibiotics
- A sudden, painful testicle tonight, which needs emergency surgery to untwist and save it
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation and examination₦50,000
The urologist examines both testicles and explains what the scan shows.
- 2
Scan and blood tests
A scrotal ultrasound and tumour marker blood tests, taken before the operation so they can be compared afterwards.
- 3
Sperm freezing, if wanted
Where cancer is suspected and children may be wanted, sperm can be frozen before surgery or treatment.
- 4
A written price
For the operation, and an implant if you want one, before a date is set.
- 5
The operation
Thirty minutes to an hour, under general or spinal anaesthetic.
- 6
Results and next steps₦25,000
The tissue result in one to two weeks decides whether scans or further treatment are needed.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First week
Sore groin and scrotum. Supportive underwear helps. Back to desk work within a week for most men.
Weeks 2 to 4
Back to normal activity, avoiding heavy lifting and contact sport until the wound has healed.
After both testicles are removed
Hot flushes, lower sex drive and erection problems are expected, as with hormone injections. Bone health is checked over time.
Risks you should be told about
- Bleeding or a collection of blood in the scrotum
- Wound infection
- Long-lasting groin or scrotal pain, uncommon
- Problems with an implant, such as infection or movement
- After both are removed: hot flushes, loss of sex drive, erection problems and thinning bones
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Can I still have sex and children with one testicle?
Usually, yes. One healthy testicle normally makes enough testosterone and sperm. Because treatment for cancer can affect fertility, sperm freezing is offered before surgery or further treatment.
Why not take a biopsy first?
Cutting into a testicle that may hold a tumour through the scrotum risks spreading it. The whole testicle is removed through the groin and examined, which gives the answer and treats it at the same time.
Is orchidectomy for prostate cancer permanent?
Yes. It lowers testosterone for good, which controls advanced prostate cancer as hormone injections do, but it cannot be undone. Some men prefer it to years of injections; others prefer injections because they can be stopped.
Is testicular cancer curable?
Most testicular cancers are curable, even when they have spread, which is why a lump should be checked within days rather than watched.
