A raised PSA, or a prostate that feels abnormal, does not mean cancer. The check starts with a urologist's examination and a repeat PSA, often adds a scan, and only then, if the results point that way, a biopsy: small samples of the prostate taken with a fine needle and examined under a microscope. The biopsy is a day case under local anaesthetic or sedation. Its price is a written quote after the consultation, because the scan, the method and the laboratory work are chosen for your case.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant urology opinion: ₦35,000

Your price is a written quote after the consultation, because it depends on whether you need a scan first, which biopsy method suits you, and how many samples are taken. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The urologist's fee for the biopsy
  • Local anaesthetic or sedation, and the ultrasound that guides the needle
  • Antibiotic cover on the day, where the method needs it
  • Laboratory examination of the samples
  • The results consultation

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation and the PSA test
  • An MRI scan of the prostate, where the urologist advises one before the biopsy
  • Treatment, if the biopsy finds cancer, which is planned and priced separately
  • Care for complications needing admission, such as an infection after the biopsy

What decides your quote

  • An MRI scan before the biopsy
  • A transperineal rather than a transrectal biopsy, or sedation rather than local anaesthetic
  • Extra samples aimed at an area seen on the scan
  • A repeat biopsy

HMO plans vary on prostate tests and biopsy. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will file the authorisation. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Who this is for

  • A man whose PSA is raised for his age, especially when it stays raised on a repeat test or keeps rising
  • A prostate that feels hard or irregular on examination
  • An MRI scan that shows an area of concern in the prostate
  • A man on active surveillance for a known low-risk cancer, at the intervals his urologist sets

When it is not the right answer

  • A single raised PSA soon after a urine infection, ejaculation, cycling or a catheter, which should be repeated first
  • A man with a urine infection, until it has been treated
  • Urinary symptoms alone with a normal PSA and examination, which usually come from an enlarged prostate and are treated as such
  • A man whose other illnesses mean a cancer found would not be treated, which the urologist discusses honestly before any biopsy

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation and examination₦35,000

Your symptoms, your family history and a gentle examination of the prostate.

  2. 2

Repeat PSA and a urine test

To rule out infection and check the first result was not a one-off.

  3. 3

    A scan, where it helps

An MRI of the prostate can show whether a biopsy is needed and where to aim. Some men have an ultrasound scan instead.

  4. 4

    Written plan and price

Whether a biopsy is advised, which method, and the price, in writing before anything is booked.

  5. 5

    The biopsy

About twenty to thirty minutes as a day case, under local anaesthetic or sedation, guided by ultrasound. Home the same day.

  6. 6

    Results consultation₦25,000

The urologist explains the result and, if cancer is found, its grade and every option, monitoring included.

Recovery, realistically

Day 1

Some soreness, settled with simple painkillers. Rest for the day.

Days 2 to 7

Blood in the urine or stool for a few days is common. Drink plenty of water.

Weeks 1 to 6

Blood in the semen can last several weeks. It is harmless.

Results

Usually ready within about two weeks, explained at the results consultation.

Risks you should be told about

  • Infection, including fever after the biopsy, which needs a doctor the same day
  • Blood in the urine, stool or semen, usually short-lived
  • Difficulty passing urine for a short time
  • A biopsy that misses a cancer, which is why the result is read with the PSA and the scan

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Does a raised PSA mean I have cancer?

No. Most raised PSA results are not cancer. Infection, an enlarged prostate and even recent cycling can raise it. That is why the check starts with a repeat test and an examination, not a biopsy.

Is a prostate biopsy painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic or sedation. Most men feel pressure and brief stinging rather than pain, and go home the same day.

Can a biopsy spread prostate cancer?

This is a common worry, but there is no good evidence that a biopsy spreads prostate cancer. The real risk is not having one when it is needed, because the treatment is decided by the result.

Why is there no fixed price on this page?

Because the scan, the method and the number of samples depend on your PSA, your examination and any MRI. You get the price in writing after the consultation, before anything is booked.

What happens if cancer is found?

The urologist explains the grade and stage and the options: monitoring for slow-growing cancers, surgery, radiotherapy or hormone treatment. Prostate cancer found early is often curable.

Prices shown are in naira and were last checked on 23 October 2026. A “from” price is the all-in starting price for the standard case. Every operation is confirmed in a written quote after your consultation, because the right operation for you, and its cost, depend on what the surgeon finds.

When did you last have a full body checkup?

Blood count, sugar, cholesterol, liver and kidneys, a heart tracing, chest X-ray and abdominal scan, with a GP before and after. One price paid online, results in 3 days.
