Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) for Kidney Stones at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the urologist and the lithotripsy team, plus pain relief or sedation during the session. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
A machine outside the body sends shock waves, aimed with X-ray or ultrasound, through the skin to the stone, breaking it into fragments small enough to pass in the urine over the following days and weeks. There is no cut and no telescope. It suits smaller stones in the kidney and upper ureter, takes under an hour with pain relief, and you go home the same day. Some stones need more than one session.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant urology opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the urologist has seen your scan, because the stone decides whether shock waves suit it and how many sessions are likely. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The urologist and the lithotripsy team
- The treatment session, with X-ray or ultrasound targeting
- Pain relief or sedation during the session
- An X-ray or scan afterwards to see how the stone has broken up
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- The CT scan and urine test before treatment
- Further sessions, quoted with the first if they are likely
- A stent or ureteroscopy if fragments get stuck
What decides your quote
- The number of sessions the stone needs
- A stent placed before treatment
- Sedation rather than tablets for pain relief
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A kidney stone up to about two centimetres that is unlikely to pass on its own
- A stone in the upper part of the ureter, near the kidney
- Someone who would rather avoid an anaesthetic and a telescope, where the stone suits it
When it is not the right answer
- Pregnancy
- A bleeding problem, or blood thinners that cannot be stopped
- An untreated urine infection, or fever with a blocked kidney, which is an emergency
- Large or very hard stones, which are better treated with PCNL or ureteroscopy
- A narrowing below the stone that would stop the fragments passing
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation and scan₦50,000
A CT scan shows whether the stone's size, position and density suit shock waves.
- 2
A written price
For the session, and for further sessions if they are likely, before a date is set.
- 3
The session
You lie on the treatment table while the machine delivers shock waves for about forty-five minutes. You feel a tapping on your back.
- 4
Home the same day
Drink plenty. Fragments pass in the urine over days to weeks.
- 5
Check X-ray or scan₦25,000
A few weeks later, to see whether the stone has cleared or needs another session.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
Same day
Home after a short rest. Some aching in the back or side.
Days 1 to 3
Blood in the urine is common and settles. Back to work within a day or two for most people.
Weeks 1 to 4
Fragments pass, sometimes with cramping pain like a small stone. Take the pain relief you are given.
Risks you should be told about
- Blood in the urine for a few days
- Pain as fragments pass
- Fragments gathering in the ureter and blocking it, needing a stent or ureteroscopy
- Urine infection
- Bruising on the back
- The stone not breaking, needing a different treatment
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Does ESWL hurt?
Most people feel a tapping or stinging on the back, eased by pain relief or light sedation. The aching afterwards is usually mild.
How many sessions will I need?
Many stones clear after one session, and some need two or three. Very hard or large stones often do not break well, which is why the scan comes first.
Is ESWL better than laser surgery?
Neither is better for every stone. Shock waves avoid an anaesthetic and a telescope, but may need repeat sessions and clear fewer stones in the lower ureter. Ureteroscopy clears more stones in one go. The scan decides.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
Because the number of sessions differs from stone to stone. You get the price in writing before treatment.
