Cystoscopy in Nigeria

A thin flexible camera is passed into the bladder to look at its lining. Under local anaesthetic it takes about ten minutes and you walk out afterwards. It is the test for blood in the urine, and it is how bladder cancer is found early enough to treat.

Rigid cystoscopy under anaesthetic, with biopsy

₦550,000

What would change this price

  • A biopsy or a general anaesthetic, priced separately above
  • A tight urethra that has to be stretched before the scope will pass

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Who this is for

  • Blood in the urine, seen or found on a test, at any age over about forty
  • Urine infections that keep coming back
  • A poor stream where the cause is not clear from the scan
  • Follow-up after treatment for a bladder growth
  • Removal of a stent left after stone surgery

When it is not the right answer

  • An active urine infection, which is treated first
  • Symptoms clearly explained by a scan and urine test already

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation₦35,000

History, examination and a urine test, so the cystoscopy answers a clear question.

  2. 2

    The procedure

About ten minutes lying down, with anaesthetic gel. Uncomfortable for a moment rather than painful for most people.

  3. 3

    Results before you leave

The urologist tells you what was seen. If a biopsy was taken, the result follows in about a week.

  4. 4

A plan, if one is needed

Anything found is discussed with a price before anything is booked.

Recovery, realistically

Same day

Back to normal activity, including work.

Days 1 to 2

Mild stinging when passing urine and a little pink colour are normal. Drink plenty.

Risks you should be told about

  • Stinging when passing urine for a day or two
  • Urinary infection, uncommon
  • Bleeding, usually light and brief

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a brief pressure or sting as the scope goes in, then very little. The anaesthetic gel makes the difference.

I saw blood once and it stopped. Do I still need this?

Yes. Blood in the urine that comes and goes is still the commonest first sign of bladder cancer, and stopping does not mean the cause has gone.

Can I drive home?

After a flexible cystoscopy under local anaesthetic, yes. After a general anaesthetic, no.
