Surgical Sperm Retrieval (PESA, TESA, Micro-TESE) at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the procedure room or theatre, handing the sample to the fertility laboratory, and a review with the urologist. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

When a semen analysis finds no sperm at all (azoospermia), sperm may still be found inside the testicle or the tube beside it. It is collected with a fine needle (PESA or TESA) or through a small cut, sometimes using an operating microscope to find the areas making sperm (micro-TESE). Any sperm found is used for IVF with ICSI, on the same day or frozen for later, so the procedure is planned with the fertility clinic.

Also called: PESA, TESA, TESE, Micro-TESE, Testicular sperm extraction, Sperm aspiration, Azoospermia surgery

How we pick your surgeon

Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • No sperm in the semen on at least two semen analyses
  • A blockage, such as after a vasectomy, an old infection or a missing tube, where reversal is not chosen
  • Testicles that make very little sperm, where micro-TESE may still find some
  • Ejaculation problems that other treatments have not overcome

When it is not the right answer

  • A low sperm count where some sperm is present in the semen, which can be used for ICSI directly
  • A man who has not yet had hormone and genetic tests, which come first
  • A varicocele or hormone problem that could be treated first to bring sperm back into the semen

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation₦50,000

Your history, an examination of the testicles and a review of your semen results.

  2. 2

    Tests first

Hormone blood tests, a scrotal scan and, often, genetic tests, which show the likely cause and the chance of finding sperm.

  3. 3

    Planning with the fertility clinic

The date is set with the clinic, so sperm can be used fresh or frozen straight away.

  4. 4

    A written price

For the method chosen, before a date is set.

  5. 5

    The procedure

Needle methods take under half an hour under local anaesthetic or sedation. Micro-TESE takes one to three hours under anaesthetic.

  6. 6

    The answer₦25,000

The laboratory usually says on the day whether sperm was found.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First days

Aching and some swelling in the scrotum. Supportive underwear and simple pain relief help.

Week 1

Back to work within a few days after a needle method, about a week after micro-TESE.

Weeks 2 to 4

Back to normal activity, including sex, once the soreness has settled.

Risks you should be told about

  • Bruising, swelling or a collection of blood in the scrotum
  • Infection
  • Pain for a few days
  • No sperm found, especially when the testicles make very little
  • Lower testosterone after micro-TESE, uncommon

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Does no sperm in my semen mean I can never father a child?

Not always. When the cause is a blockage, sperm can usually be found. When the testicles make very little sperm, it is sometimes still found with micro-TESE. The tests beforehand give a realistic idea of your chances.

Can the sperm be frozen?

Yes. Sperm found can be frozen for later IVF cycles, which can save repeating the procedure.

Why are genetic tests needed?

Some causes of azoospermia are genetic and can affect the chance of finding sperm or be passed on to a son. Knowing this before the procedure helps you decide.

Why is there no fixed price on this page?

Because a needle aspiration and a micro-TESE under the microscope are very different procedures. You get the price in writing before a date is set.
