Chalazion Removal in Nigeria

A firm, painless lump in the eyelid, from a blocked oil gland, is opened from the inside of the lid and scraped out under local anaesthetic. It takes about fifteen minutes and leaves no visible scar. Most settle on their own with warm compresses, so this is for the ones that do not.

Who this is for

  • A lump that has lasted more than one to two months despite warm compresses and lid cleaning
  • A lump large enough to press on the eye and blur vision
  • A chalazion that keeps becoming inflamed

When it is not the right answer

  • A new chalazion in its first few weeks, which often settles with warm compresses
  • A red, painful, swollen lid, which is a stye or an infection and is treated first
  • A lump that keeps coming back in the same spot in an older adult, which needs a biopsy rather than repeated drainage

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Eye examination₦35,000

The lump is confirmed as a chalazion and the lid margins checked for the inflammation that causes them.

  2. 2

    Warm compresses first

Twice a day for several weeks, with lid cleaning. Many settle without anything else.

  3. 3

    The procedure

About fifteen minutes. The lid is numbed and turned, and the cyst is opened and cleared from the inside.

  4. 4

Home with a pad for a few hours

    Ointment for a few days.

  5. 5

    Review at two weeks₦25,000

If anything remains or a new one has formed.

Recovery, realistically

Day 1

The pad comes off the same evening. A little ooze is normal.

Days 2 to 7

Some swelling and bruising. Ointment as written.

Week 2

The lid is usually flat and comfortable.

Risks you should be told about

  • The chalazion coming back, or a new one forming
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Infection, uncommon
  • A small notch in the lid margin, rare

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Will it leave a scar?

Not a visible one. The cut is made on the inside of the eyelid.

Can I just leave it?

Yes, if it is not bothering you. Many go away on their own over months. Removal is for ones that persist, grow or affect vision.

Why do I keep getting them?

Usually inflamed lid margins, sometimes with skin conditions such as rosacea. Daily lid cleaning and warm compresses reduce new ones.
