Months or years after cataract surgery, the thin membrane that holds the new lens can turn cloudy, and vision blurs again as if the cataract had come back. A laser makes a small opening in the membrane, in a few minutes, in a clinic chair. There is no cut and no stitch, and most people see more clearly within a day or two.

Who this is for
- Vision that has become blurred, hazy or glary again after cataract surgery
- Trouble reading, driving at night or recognising faces months or years after a successful operation
- A clouded capsule seen at examination that blocks the view of the retina
When it is not the right answer
- Blur in the first weeks after cataract surgery, which is usually the eye still settling
- Blur caused by the retina, glaucoma or dry eye, which the laser will not help
- Sudden loss of vision, flashes or a curtain over the sight, which needs to be seen the same day
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Eye examination₦35,000
The blur is confirmed as a clouded capsule, and the retina and pressure are checked so nothing else is missed.
- 2
The laser
Drops to widen the pupil, a contact lens on the eye, and a few minutes at the laser. Painless. You hear clicks.
- 3
Pressure check
About an hour later, because the pressure can rise briefly after the laser.
- 4
Home the same day
With drops for a week. Bring someone, as vision is blurred from the drops for a few hours.
- 5
Review at four to six weeks₦25,000
Included. Your glasses prescription can be updated at this point.
Recovery, realistically
Same day
Blurred from the dilating drops for a few hours. Do not drive.
Days 1 to 3
Vision clears, often within a day. A few floaters are common and usually fade.
Week 1
Drops as written. Normal activities from the next day.
Risks you should be told about
- A short rise in eye pressure, which is why it is checked before you leave
- Floaters, usually fading over weeks
- Swelling at the centre of the retina, uncommon and treatable with drops
- Small marks on the lens implant, which rarely affect vision
- Retinal detachment, rare: new flashes, a shower of floaters or a curtain over vision need to be seen the same day
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Has my cataract come back?
No. A cataract cannot come back once it is removed. What clouds is the thin membrane that holds the new lens. It is common, and it is treated with this laser rather than another operation.
Does it hurt?
No. The eye is numbed with drops and you feel nothing more than the contact lens resting on the eye.
Will it need doing again?
Very rarely. Once the opening is made, the membrane does not cloud over again.
How soon will I see clearly?
Most people notice clearer vision within a day or two, once the dilating drops wear off.
