Ptosis Repair in Nigeria

The muscle that lifts the upper eyelid is tightened or reattached so the lid no longer covers the pupil. It is a day case, usually under local anaesthetic in adults. It is not the same as cosmetic eyelid surgery, which removes excess skin: ptosis repair corrects the height of the lid.

Also called: Ptosis correction, Droopy eyelid surgery, Levator advancement, Eyelid lift for ptosis

Who this is for

  • An upper lid covering part of the pupil and blocking the top of your vision
  • Tilting the chin up or straining the eyebrows to see
  • A lid that has dropped with age or after years of contact lens wear
  • A child whose droop covers the pupil, which needs early surgery to protect the sight in that eye

When it is not the right answer

  • A droop that appeared suddenly, or with double vision, a large pupil or headache, which needs an emergency check the same day
  • A droop that gets worse through the day or with tiredness, which needs tests for a muscle condition first
  • Heavy, excess upper lid skin with a normal lid height, which is treated by cosmetic eyelid surgery instead

Recovery, realistically

Days 1 to 3

Swelling and bruising. Cold compresses and sleeping propped up help.

Week 1 to 2

Stitches out. No eye make-up and no swimming.

Week 2 to 6

Swelling settles and the lid height becomes clear.

Three months on

The final result.

Risks you should be told about

  • The lid sitting slightly too high or too low, sometimes needing an adjustment
  • A difference in height between the two eyes
  • Dry eye, or difficulty closing the eye fully in the early weeks
  • Infection or bleeding

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Is this the same as blepharoplasty?

No. Blepharoplasty removes excess skin for appearance. Ptosis repair raises a lid that sits too low. Some people need both, and that is decided at the examination.

Can my child have it?

Yes. A child whose lid covers the pupil needs it sooner rather than later, because the eye can become lazy. Children have it under a general anaesthetic.

Will both eyes match?

Matching is the aim, and most people are pleased. Small differences can remain, and a minor adjustment is occasionally needed.
