A medicine is injected into the jelly inside the eye to stop leaking and the growth of abnormal blood vessels at the back of the eye. It treats swelling at the centre of vision from diabetes, wet age-related macular degeneration and blocked retinal veins. The injection itself takes seconds under numbing drops. The treatment is a course, not a single visit: usually a monthly injection to start, then less often as the eye responds.
Also called: Intravitreal injection, Avastin eye injection, Bevacizumab injection, Ranibizumab (Lucentis) injection, Aflibercept (Eylea) injection, Eye injection for macular degeneration

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant ophthalmology opinion: ₦35,000
Your price is a written quote after the examination and scan, because the medicine chosen changes the cost several times over, and the number of injections depends on how your eye responds. Each price does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The retina specialist's fee for the injection
- The medicine for one injection
- Numbing drops and the antiseptic preparation
- An eye pressure check after the injection
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- The OCT scan used to decide whether each next injection is needed
- Laser treatment, priced on its own page
- Diabetes and blood pressure care
What decides your quote
- Which medicine is used: bevacizumab (Avastin), ranibizumab (Lucentis) or aflibercept (Eylea)
- One eye or both
- How many injections the course needs
- Laser or surgery added to the plan
HMO plans vary widely on eye injections, and many cover none or only some. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will file the authorisation. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price for each injection before anything is booked.
Who this is for
- Diabetic macular oedema that involves the centre of vision
- Wet age-related macular degeneration, where sudden distortion or a dark patch in the centre of vision appears
- Swelling at the back of the eye after a blocked retinal vein
- Some people with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, alongside or instead of laser
When it is not the right answer
- Dry macular degeneration, which these medicines do not treat
- An eye with an active infection on or around it, until it is treated
- Anyone who cannot attend the regular injections and scans the treatment depends on
- Pregnancy, where the medicine is avoided unless the specialist advises otherwise
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Retina examination₦35,000
Vision, pressure and a dilated look at the retina.
- 2
OCT scan
A painless scan that measures the swelling at the centre of vision. It is repeated during the course to decide each next step.
- 3
A written plan and price
Which medicine, how often, and the price per injection, in writing.
- 4
The injection
Numbing drops, antiseptic, a small clip to hold the lids, and a fine needle through the white of the eye. The injection takes seconds and you are in the room for about fifteen minutes.
- 5
Pressure check, then home
Your eye pressure is checked before you leave. Bring someone to take you home.
- 6
Regular reviews₦25,000
Usually monthly at first. The gap is stretched as the eye settles.
Recovery, realistically
Same day
Gritty and watery for a few hours. A red patch on the white of the eye is common and harmless.
Next few days
Small floating specks are normal for a day or two. No eye rubbing and no swimming for a few days.
Weeks after
Swelling usually falls over the following weeks, and the next injection is planned from the scan.
Risks you should be told about
- Infection inside the eye, rare but serious: a painful, red eye with falling vision in the days after needs to be seen the same day
- A short rise in eye pressure
- A harmless red patch of bleeding on the white of the eye
- Floaters for a few days
- Retinal tear or detachment, rare
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Does the injection hurt?
Most people feel pressure rather than pain. The eye is numbed first, and the injection itself takes seconds.
What is the difference between Avastin, Lucentis and Eylea?
All three block the same signal that makes vessels leak and grow. Bevacizumab (Avastin) is the least expensive and is widely used for the eye, though it was first licensed for cancer. Ranibizumab (Lucentis) and aflibercept (Eylea) are made for the eye and cost considerably more. Your specialist explains which suits your eye and your budget.
How many injections will I need?
Usually a monthly injection for the first few months, then fewer as the eye responds. Some people need injections for years. Your scans decide, and each step is priced before it is booked.
Can I stop when my vision improves?
Not without your specialist. Stopping too soon can let the swelling return and cost sight. The gap between injections is stretched carefully, not cut off.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
Because the medicine chosen changes the price several times over, and the number of injections depends on your eye. You get the price per injection in writing before anything is booked.
