The short answer
After a tooth is removed, bite on gauze to stop the bleeding, and for the first day do not rinse, spit hard, smoke or drink through a straw, so the blood clot stays in the socket. From the second day rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Soreness should improve each day. Pain that gets worse after two or three days may be a dry socket, and needs the dentist.

The first 24 hours
The clot that forms in the socket is the start of healing. Protect it.
- Bite firmly on gauze or a clean folded cloth for 30 to 45 minutes
- Rest, and keep your head raised
- Eat soft food on the other side once the numbness wears off
- Avoid hot drinks, alcohol, smoking, straws and hard rinsing
Days two to seven
Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Brush your other teeth as normal and the teeth next to the socket carefully. Swelling usually peaks around the second day and then settles.
When to call
Call if pain gets worse after two or three days, if the socket smells or tastes bad, or if bleeding starts again and does not stop with pressure. Go to a hospital emergency department now, not a clinic appointment, if your face or neck is swelling, you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, you cannot open your mouth, or you have a high temperature with tooth pain. Call 112 in Lagos.
