What the test is for
There are four main ABO blood groups, and each one is either RhD positive or RhD negative, so there are eight groups in all. The laboratory mixes your red cells with antibodies and watches which ones make them clump.
Your group matters most in two places. Receiving blood of the wrong ABO group can be life-threatening, which is why a hospital always tests your blood again and cross-matches it before any transfusion. And in pregnancy, a mother who is RhD negative carrying a baby who is RhD positive can be offered an anti-D injection to stop her body making antibodies that could harm this or a later baby.
When a doctor asks for it
- At the first antenatal visit in pregnancy, with a full blood count and rhesus status
- When you want to know your group, for example to donate blood
- Before planned surgery, although the hospital will still group and cross-match your blood itself
How to prepare
- No fasting. Eat and drink as normal.

Blood group test: questions people ask
How much is a blood group test in Nigeria?
₦8,000 on Mezo for the blood group with rhesus status, or ₦15,000 with your genotype as well. You pay online before you go.
Is the blood group on my card enough for a transfusion?
No. Before any transfusion, the hospital tests your blood again and cross-matches it against the donor blood. Knowing your group helps with planning, especially in pregnancy, but it does not replace that check.
I am rhesus negative and pregnant. What should I do?
Tell your antenatal team early. They check whether you have antibodies and, where it is needed, offer anti-D injections that stop your body making them. It is a routine part of antenatal care, not an emergency.
Can I pay at the lab?
No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.
How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
