What the test is for
Liver problems often cause no symptoms until they are advanced, and many, such as fatty liver, are first found on a routine blood test done for another reason. An abnormal LFT is a reason to find the cause, not a diagnosis in itself: the doctor reads it with your history, and may add a hepatitis test or a scan.
When a doctor asks for it
- Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice), dark urine or pale stools
- Suspected hepatitis, or a positive hepatitis B test
- Regular heavy drinking
- Before starting a statin, and on some long-term medicines that can affect the liver
- Overweight or type 2 diabetes, where fatty liver is common
How to prepare
- No fasting is needed for a liver function test on its own.
- If it is booked with a fasting blood sugar or a lipid profile, fast as those tests need.
Go to the nearest emergency department now, not a lab, for
- Yellow eyes or skin with confusion or drowsiness
- Vomiting blood or passing black stools
- Severe tummy pain

In Lagos: a sample taken at home
In Lagos a nurse or phlebotomist can take your blood sample at home and bring it to the laboratory. It is booked and paid for online, with the price for your area shown before you pay. Home collection is only in Lagos for now.

How to book

Have a doctor review it. An abnormal result can come from fatty liver, alcohol, a virus such as hepatitis B, some medicines or a gallstone, and the next test depends on which is likely.
Can I pay at the lab?
No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.
How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
