What the test is for
Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver. It spreads through blood and body fluids, and most often from mother to baby at birth. You cannot tell from symptoms whether you have it, so the WHO says a laboratory test is essential, and in countries where it is common it recommends that all adults are offered an HBsAg test.
If you test positive, a doctor checks how active the infection is and how your liver is, usually with a liver function test and a viral load. Chronic hepatitis B can be treated with antiviral medicines, which slow liver damage; most people who start treatment take it for life. Babies should get the hepatitis B vaccine as soon as possible after birth.
