What the test is for

The Widal test looks for antibodies, not for the typhoid germ itself. Antibodies can be raised by a past typhoid infection, a typhoid vaccine or other infections. A study at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital found that a single Widal test was not a valid way to diagnose typhoid, and that heavier malaria infections were linked with positive Widal results.

This is how many people with malaria, or a virus, are told they have 'malaria and typhoid' and given antibiotics they do not need. Typhoid germs that resist common antibiotics are increasing, so it matters that antibiotics are used only when they are needed.

When a doctor asks for it

  • A doctor suspects typhoid: a fever that climbs over several days, with headache, tummy pain, weakness and loss of appetite
  • Alongside a blood culture, which finds the germ itself and shows which antibiotics will work, rather than in place of one

How to prepare

  • No fasting.
  • Have the sample taken before you start any antibiotic. Antibiotics can stop a blood culture growing the germ.

Go to the nearest emergency department now, not a lab, for

  • Confusion, a fit, or being very drowsy
  • Severe tummy pain, vomiting blood or black stools
  • Being unable to keep any fluid down

Widal test (typhoid): questions people ask

How much is a malaria and typhoid test in Nigeria?

On Mezo, malaria and Widal together is ₦13,000, the Widal alone is ₦9,000 and a blood culture is ₦22,000. All are paid online and done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site.

My Widal test is positive. Do I have typhoid?

Not necessarily. A positive Widal on its own does not prove typhoid. Ask a doctor to review the result before you take antibiotics, and ask for a blood culture if typhoid is still suspected.

Is the Widal test useless?

Not useless, but it cannot carry a diagnosis on its own. A doctor reads it with your symptoms, and confirms typhoid with a blood culture.

Can I pay at the lab?

No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.

How do I get my result?

When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
